Ithcy, watery eyes? Optometrists give tips to relieve spring allergy symptoms

The sunshine and bright colors of spring are here, but so are seasonal allergies from pollen, dander, smog or mold that can often lead to itchy, watery eyes. Eye irritation is the body's immune response to allergens, so when pollen comes in contact with eyes, for example, the body releases histamine, causing eye redness, burning and itching.

The Kentucky Optometric Association says discomfort from itchy, swollen or water eyes can be reduced with simple steps, such as maintaining a healthy diet full of anti-oxidants like spinach, broccoli, carrot discomfort that boost the immune system in addition to taking fish oil supplements that help reduce redness and irritation.

Other tips from the KOA include using preservative-free lubricating eye drops or re-wetting eyes with contact solution if you wear contact lenses. Applying a cold compress to eyes can also relieve itching and redness by constricting the histamine-releasing blood vessels. And remember: Do not touch or rub eyes, and be sure to wash hands with soap and water.

A local eye doctor can examine eye allergy symptoms to ensure the cause is properly identified, said Dr. Max Downey, an optometrist in Campbellsville. Optometrists' treatment could range from eye drops to prescription medicines, said Downey.

In addition to discussing allergy relief with your optometrist, the KOA recommends adults have yearly eye exams at the minimum, depending on the severity of allergies.

Metal Braces: Best Form Of Orthodontic braces Of All Times

The term braces does not really bring a smile to our face. This is because you know that it is your very smile that is going to be affected by braces. Braces the term has somehow become a generalized term for metal braces. They are shunned, disliked by all but they are still preferred as the best form of braces. Metal braces have indeed travelled a long way and with every passing age the complications in its mechanism became simpler. The first braces were used in the 1950s when the use of stainless steel was introduces. The bonding of the metal brackets directly with the teeth was started from the 1980s and today metal braces are quite comfortable to use. But there are still certain advantages due to which metal braces are still very popular almost after fifty years of its invention and use.

Advantages Of Metal braces
  • The best part of metal braces is that they are still now very cost effective. In comparison to Invisalign which costs around $3000 to $9000 these braces are one time investments and needs minor modification during the tenure of its use.
  • These days' metal braces are found in different types like gold metal braces which are recommended to those who are allergic to nickel. Another type of metal braces in Hidden braces or lingual braces. They are set at the back of the teeth and the age old complain regarding the looks of the braces does not matter at all.
  • The metal braces in comparison to other types of braces need comparatively much less amount of time of use. Since they are hardly removed from the teeth the pressure on the teeth are gradual yet constant. Hence their tenure is quite small.
Disadvantages of Metal Braces
  • There are indeed some restriction on the foot habits like avoiding coffee or having those items that are sticky like sugar candies. Hence becomes a big problem for kids.
  • In case pieces of food get stuck in the teeth removing it in case one is wearing metal braces is problematic.
  • Metal braces can actually create stains on the emamel of the teeth after its removal.
  • Cleaning of the teeth that is brushing is a big time problem for metal braces. There is no question of flossing as the floss thread may actually get stuck in the wires of the braces.
  • But despite all these problems most orthodontists prefer metal braces over any other braces because they are very durable and there are very less number of cases of complications.
Hi I am Bella Jones studying dentistry in US. I learnt about orthodontic braces that helps to align teeth, during my course from where I got to know that orthodontics full metal braces are the safest option.

Five Simple Tips To Create Room For Exercise

No matter whether it was a new year's resolution or you have been fitness addicts for ages, it is getting extremely tough to fit workouts in your busy schedules. Almost everyone is living with a tight schedule nowadays coupled with a slight lack of motivation for exercise. This results in skipping the gyms and workout plans and before you even know it, a month has passed by when you last stretched your body.

How to Find Time for Exercise:

You only need 30 minutes for couple of days every week and that will be enough for an average person. If however, you cannot do exercise for this small amount of time, there are some micro exercises that you can do easily. Nonetheless, you have to make a schedule and stick to it to maximize the benefits. Following lines explain some sneaky methods to find some time for workout sessions.

Make Use of Lunch Hours:

Instead of stuffing a sandwich or chatting with friends in company cafeteria, lunch time can be utilized to stretch the body and refresh your mind. Therefore, you can find a near by gym offering classes in 12-2 pm slot or if you are a social guy, can go for a small walk with your friends. This will not only make your body to have some physical exercise but will rejuvenate your mind as well.

Commute Your Habits:

Everyone cannot manage this but if you can do so, you can get some welcome exercise while going to and coming back from work. For instance, if office is situated close to your home, leave the car behind and make use of your legs or bicycle. On the other hand, if you have to go far enough, leave the bus or train one stop before your destination and walk to your office. The advantage of commuting is that it will seamlessly adjust into your routines providing a myriad of health benefits.

Start Your Day With Exercise:

If you want to start the exercise, make it a priority and do it before anything else in the day. If you perform the workouts in the morning, you will not have to find time for it later on. Morning jerks are often more effective than coffee and things like gentle walk will do the job for you. If however, as a starter you are troubled by hectic exercises, you can use natural muscle building and fitness supplements to ward of the fatigue and tiredness.

Exercise Immediately After Work:

It is a wrong thinking to go to gym after dinner because in most of the cases you remain glued to your sofa or bed. So it is better to go straight to gym after work because once you get home, it is mostly very difficult to induce enough motivation and energy to attend the gym classes.

Exercise With Kids:

It is difficult job to handle kids but you can make it interesting by exercising with them. Therefore, instead of going to bowling, take your kids to nearby park for a gentle walk. Furthermore, get rid of your pride and enjoy with your kids and you can even take them to explore country sides on weekends.

Conclusion:

These subtle changes in your lifestyle will definitely bring many health benefits for you and you will experience a better body and more energetic brain within that body.

Top 3 Celebrity Steroid Use Cases

Steroids have been in use for many years, and have been used by a number of different celebrities. In the United States, prescription is the only way of getting most steroids. In spite of this, many sports players have often turned to steroids in order to help with their strength and endurance. This is in spite of the negative effects that the steroids can have on a person's body. If you are going to use steroids, then it is a good idea to consider the options and understand that they need to be used in balance with exercise and a healthy diet. For those who want to find out more, it is a good idea to speak to your general practitioner. Below is a list of some of the most well-known cases of where celebrities have taken steroids and performance enhancing substances.

Maron Jones

Many people may know Maron Jones as being a champion when it came to track and field. One of her greatest achievements was in 2000 at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. At these Olympics, Jones won five different medals and had a colorful career in sports before that.

Maron Jones was eventually caught in what was known as the BALCO scandal. After this, all of her titles were stripped after 2007. BALCO was a specific group that had helped in the supply of anabolic steroids to numerous different athletes. Maron Jones was of course not the only one to have had her titles stripped, but she is the one that many people in the United States would remember. When Jones admitted that she had indeed taken steroids, it also came out that she had lied to two different juries. As a result of this, Jones was sentenced to six months in jail.

Tim Montgomery

Tim Montgomery is also known as being one of those athletes who were involved in BALCO. Like Maron Jones, he was a champion when it came to the area of track and field. He trained and associated closely with Maron Jones. Montgomery is now retired from sports, but when the case came to light, he was banned from professional sports for two years.

Ken Caminiti

A lot of people these days are aware of anabolic steroids as performance enhancing drugs thanks to what happened to Ken Caminiti. Caminiti was well-known around 1996. He played for the Atlanta Braves and won a variety of different awards. Just some of his awards include the Golden Gloves.

In the world of baseball, Caminiti was one of the first players who eventually admitted that he had used steroids in order to enhance his performance. It was thanks to Caminiti's admission that people began to take a closer look at things like anabolic steroids.

All of these cases have left their mark on sports people around the world. The use of steroids and other drugs are still banned in professional sports to this day. Many places will require athletes to take drug tests.

FDA requires OxyContin pills to be non-crushable to deter abuse

The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it would block generic, crushable versions of OxyContin from coming to the market and approve the reformulated, non-crushable OxyContin, which deters abuse of the powerful painkiller.

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell applauded the move. “Given the public health epidemic of prescription drug abuse and the ravaging effects it has on families all across Kentucky, this announcement is great news and will prevent an influx of crushable, generic OxyContin from coming to market,” McConnell said in a release.

OxyContin is a potent drug designed to treat severe pain. Without abuse-deterrent formulas, addicts can crush the pills to get an immediate heroin-like high. The reformulated product has properties that make the tablet harder to crush, break, or dissolve and that prevent it from being injected in order to achieve a quick high, an FDA press release said.

Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death in Kentucky, and law enforcement, lawmakers and health providers have expressed their concerns that crushable, generic versions would worsen the problem.

The FDA decision came on the same day manufacturer Purdue Pharma’s patent on the original drug was set to expire, and McConnell has been actively meeting with federal officials on behalf of those concerned. Rep. Hal Rogers, R-5th, also lobbied for it. (Read more)

In an editorial, the Lexington Herald-Leader points out that the move means a continued OxyContin monopoly and more profits for Purdue Pharma, which "paid $600 million in fines in 2007, and three of the company's executives paid a total of $34.5 million, after they pleaded guilty to misleading doctors and the public about OxyContin's addictiveness. . . . We wonder why Rogers and McConnell aren't calling for Purdue to voluntarily share its new formulation."

Office Germs: Safe for Work

The Editors of Office Product Reviews at Best Choice Reviews decided to research the topic of:

SAFE FOR WORK?

Keeping clean and healthy in the office may be harder than you think.
  • 1 in 3 office workers have witnessed co-workers leaving restrooms without washing their hands.
  • 53% of Americans don't wash their hands after exchanging money.
  • The average person touches 300 surfaces every 30 minutes, exposing themselves to 840,000 germs.
Diligent washing, wiping and sanitizing can help office professionals reduce their rates of cold and flu by as much as 80%.
  • 72% of Americans typically go to work when they are sick.
  • 55% of workers say they feel guilty when they call in sick.
  • 78% of workers say they wash their hands often.
  • 15% of workers avoid shaking hands with people to avoid germs.
  • 3% skip meetings where sick people are in attendance.
Just how dirty is my office?

Researchers swabbed about 5,000 surfaces in office buildings, including law firms, insurance companies, healthcare offices, call centers and factories. The swabs were analyzed with a device that measures adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is a molecule found in all animal, vegetable, bacteria, yeast and mold cells.

High ATP levels are present in food or other organic residues left on surfaces. The more ATP found on a surface, the more likely it's flourishing with bacteria and viruses. An ATP reading of over 100 suggests a surface could use a scrub-down. Readings of 300 or higher are considered officially dirty and at high risk for spreading illness.

ATP counts of 300 or higher
  • 75% of break room sink faucet handles
  • 48% of microwave door handles
  • 27% of keyboards
  • 26% of refrigerator door handles
  • 23% of water fountain buttons
  • 21% of vending machine buttons
  • ATP counts of 100 or higher
  • 91% of break room sink faucet handles
  • 80% of microwave door handles
  • 69% of keyboards
  • 69% of refrigerator door handles
  • 53% of water fountain buttons
  • 51% of all computer mice
  • 51% of all desk phones
  • 48% of all coffee pots and dispensers
  • 43% of vending machine buttons
Office hygiene tips
  • Keep hand sanitizer at your desk and use it immediately after every meeting or conference.
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer when you get to work, especially after riding mass transit, such as trains or buses.
  • Use disinfectant wipes to clean your desk at least once a day.

Keep a first aid kit to ensure instant health injury relief

Whether you are an active individual or part of a lively family, getting into scrapes happens to all of us. But knowing you have an up to date first aid kit to hand could often mean the difference between life and death should the unexpected happen.

No one likes the idea of getting into an accident, but however cautious you are accidents happen. So whether you have a cut finger or one of the family has a fall while playing in the garden, it's good to know that you have a well-stocked, up to date first aid emergency kit to clean, protect and sooth any injuries. Being prepared gives you the peace of mind that you can be effective in any emergency situation.

Store everything together

Like many people, your medical supplies are probably stored in a variety of places around the house kitchen draws, bathroom cabinets or even shelves in the bedroom. However first aid kits, or having one place to keep all your medical items, are a much better idea. For a start you will know that everything is in one safe place; a place that every member of the family will know about should there be an accident. It also means that your individual items will be stored properly, won't get damaged and will make it easier to find the exact item you want in an emergency situation.

Your kit could be a lifesaver!

The best first aid kits are ones that are well equipped with a good variety of supplies, covering injuries that involve bleeding as well as internal injuries such as a broken bone or pulled muscle. A good first aid kit will help you prevent infection, stop any excessive loss of blood, reduce scarring, help prevent an injury turning into a chronic problem and in the extreme, may even help prevent death.

Building the ideal first aid kit.

It is quite easy to buy a ready-made first aid kit in the shops, but it is just as simple to put together your own. It may be best to include some staple items such as plasters in a variety of sizes, sterile gauze dressings including eye dressings and a selection of bandages and safety pins. Add to that some alcohol-free cleansing wipes and adhesive tape, as well as creams that combat skin rashes, insect bites and some antiseptic cream. Items such as tweezers, scissors and a good thermometer are also handy to have available in your kit, as well as a selection of pain killers, decongestant and antihistamine tablets.

Always ensure that first aid kits are well stocked and stored in a cool place that the whole family is aware of. However, do make sure that the kit itself is securely stored out of reach from very small children, to ensure their own safety. Remember to regularly check use by dates, replace items as and when you need to and consider having smaller versions of your first aid kit for both the car and holiday travel.

UK Healthcare says it must get even bigger, and expand its market area, to provide needed services to Kentucky

By Molly Burchett and Al Cross
Kentucky Health News

The University of Kentucky's health-care system has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade, becoming one of the state's largest businesses, but its boss says it must expand its geographical reach to maintain its newly raised national status and to ensure access to quality care for Kentuckians.

Over the last decade, UK HealthCare’s caseload has increased 85 percent, and its annual hospital budget has increased from $300 million to $922 million, Dr. Michael Karpf, executive vice president for health affairs, said in an interview.

This explosive growth, in addition to the growth of the UK medical school, has jacked up the enterprise's national ranking. It has grown from about the 85th largest academic hospital in the U.S. to approaching the 35th largest in terms of total discharges, the benchmark it uses. That means it has jumped from the bottom third to the top third in less than a decade. (For a more precise measurement over time, based on a Council of Teaching Hospitals standard, see chart.)

The push for growth and development began in 2003, after UK's caseload hit a plateau even though the 1998 General Assembly had mandated it to become a top 20 public research institution. Karpf came aboard and combined the Chandler Medical Center, clinics, faculty practice plans and the College of Medicine into a single integrated system of care -- branded as UK HealthCare -- which he commands. Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington was added in 2007.

"Ten years ago people viewed this a safety-net hospital," Karpf said of the Chandler facility. "We've had to redo the brand." Now more people are choosing the hospital, as suggested by who's paying the bills. Medicare now covers a plurality of the patients; a decade ago, it trailed Medicaid, the program for the poor and disabled. In that time, the total caseload grew 7.2 percent; Medicare cases rose 10.9 percent.

But despite the huge growth in the last decade, the enterprise is still not big enough, Karpf said.

"We want the hospital to be the first choice when it comes to complex care,” he said. “We must advance to better serve the health-care needs of Kentucky.” To do this, he said, UK HealthCare is rejuvenating its brand as "Kentucky's Best Hospital," with a broad range of advanced specialties to keep Kentuckians from leaving the state for care, and is moving to expand its geographic reach to Western Kentucky and out-of-state markets.

Karpf said UK must expand because its traditional market, approximately the eastern half of the state, is not large enough to provide the number of cases that UK will need to receive certification as a federal “Center of Excellence” for complex services like brain surgery and heart, liver, kidney and lung transplantation. He said such a designation will be necessary to get enough referrals from doctors and smaller hospitals to maintain these services and to guarantee that Kentuckians can get the care they need inside the state. "What we make money on is the complex stuff," he said.

Unless UK secures half the available business from out-of-state competitive areas over the next 10 years, Karpf said, "It becomes an issue of access for Kentuckians."

He said the out-of-state institutions that are large and advanced enough to effectively compete with UK as a major referral center include Vanderbilt University, Washington University in St. Louis, Indiana University, Ohio State University, Cleveland Clinic, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Virginia. Vanderbilt is the nation's 10th largest academic medical center and gets many patients from Western and Southern Kentucky.

UK HealthCare map shows out-of-state markets and institutions it targets for its expansion.
What about Louisville, Cincinnati, Knoxville and other cities? Karpf said the University of Louisville, the University of Tennessee, the University of Cincinnati and West Virginia University are too small and too far behind to be Centers of Excellence. U of L's hospital ranks 88th in total discharges among academic medical centers.

All hospitals are facing challenges from federal health-care reform, but Karpf said at UK it has prompted a culture change centered on quality of care, which the reform law is designed to reward. As UK tries to expand its market, he said, it is critical to stay focused on, safety, service and patient satisfaction. One issue Karpf is dealing with now is the hospital's cardiothoracic surgery program for children, which has been suspended pending an internal review.

As UK seeks more referrals, Karpf said, it is building better relationships with smaller hospitals. "in the past, academic medical centers have been seen as predatory," he said. "We concluded that we need to be seen as in another line of business. . . . We have very strong relationships with community hospitals in Western Kentucky."

For example, UK is  training a cardiologist who is dedicated to practicing in Paducah once his training is complete, and kidney specialists from the area are in its transplant network. The specialists evaluate patients, send them to Lexington for transplants, and provide follow-up care upon their return. Such coordination helps community hospitals keep patients and recruit professional staff, and helps UK capture the cases it might lose to Vanderbilt and other out-of-state hospitals.

Baptist Hospitals Inc. has a large facility in Paducah and recently bought the Trover Health System hospital in Madisonville, making Baptist the largest hospital system in Kentucky, but Karpf said UK has a strong relationships with Baptist and the Norton Healthcare hospitals in Louisville. "They do not compete with us for complex care," he said. "We don't go after the bread-and-butter cases."

Complex care, for which insurance companies pay well, accounts for 5 to 7 percent of UK's cases but almost all its profits. Karpf said UK loses money on another 5 to 7 percent and breaks about even on the rest. He said the profits are invested in buildings, technological equipment and attracting nationally recognized specialists.

The most visible evidence of that is the hospital's new bed tower, part of $1.4 billion UK Healthcare has spent revitalizing itself, mostly with its own profits. But the larger impact is probably in expansion of good-paying jobs.

Dr. Michael Karpf
"We've been the most important growth engine in this region," said Karpf. UK HealthCare went from paying $350 million in salaries and benefits in 2004 to more than $700 million last year. The College of Medicine went from 1,810 employees in 2004 to 2,337 in 2012. The hospital grew from 2,562 full time employees in 2004 to 5,544 in 2012, a 116 percent increase.

The medical school's full-time faculty has expanded from 443 a decade ago to 625 now. "We know the stronger you are clinically, the better your research profile," Karpf said. UK Healthcare hopes to achieve National Cancer Institute designation for the Markey Cancer Center, and it must continue to evolve in its clinical, education and research missions, Karpf said.

If UK HealthCare can do that, it will continue to be a major economic driver for Kentucky while ensuring that all Kentuckians have access to quality care.

Less Microwaving - Push for Fresh Fruits for Better Health

Let's be honest no one thinks that popping a frozen dinner into the microwave is the best way to go about improving his or her health. The larger problem is that microwaving is just too easy a notion mothers in the 1950s would've been all too happy to test out. Invented the mid-60s to make things just that easy they've become a crutch for a society that is today too busy and too tempted to make healthy eating choices. It doesn't hurt that many microwavable food items, like Pop Tarts, are designed to make us crave them.

Vitamins and nutrients

Fruits have long been known to provide vitamins and nutrients that processed foods just don't offer, and they do it with a portability that many microwavable food items are only now beginning to rival. According to the United States government, a diet rich in fruit may reduce the risk for heart attack and stroke, as well as various types of cancers. High-fruit diets provide fiber, which can help with obesity and type 2 diabetes, while the potassium content in some fruits may help lower blood pressure. The risk of developing bone loss and kidney stones is also shown to decrease with a high potassium diet.

Unlike microwavable fare, fruits are generally low in not only calories, but also sodium and fat as well. If you have cholesterol be concerns, you should be aware that no fruits contain it. While many processed foods have nutrients added, fruits naturally contain vitamin C and other often under-consumed nutrients like potassium and folic acid.

Make the effort

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to eating a diet rich in fruits is cost and availability. In cold weather states, fruits have in the past been difficult to come by, and at an increased cost. Fortunately, stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes are increasing their reach, providing shoppers with greater opportunity to buy. Improving technologies in plant biology are also helping keep fruit on the shelves longer.

In the end, however, fruits biggest selling point is their taste. From apples and oranges to peaches and bananas, the vast array of fruits available are sure to leave most any person with some that please their palate. Even if you don't wish to just grab an apple and bite in, fresh fruits can often be made into sauces and jellies with relative ease. And even if you're putting them in a pie, they provide the same nutrients, albeit with additional calories.

While it may make sense to have a granola bar packed along with you on a hike, processed foods are a disastrous temptation when kept in the household. Make an effort to keep fresh fruits and vegetables on hand at all times to help model behavior for children, and to keep them healthy. Without adult support, children often gravitate toward sweeter, more fattening foods, which can manifest itself in health problems sooner than later. For a healthy diet, fresh fruits are the way to go.

What problems do you solve when you lose weight?

People with a weight problem and overweight people have many reasons to decide to lose those extra pounds. Working on a weight problem is a good way to start taking care of your body. The results for some people are immediate, but for some it takes more time before the change starts to show. Changing a life style in order to become healthier and fit demands a lot of motivation. After getting the wanted results, there is also a lot of work on keeping and maintaining the weight on the same level.

Those who want to lose weight need to be well prepared for a long term process of changing the way of thinking, changing the way they see food, changing their eating habits and their lifestyle and, also, working on one's personality. It is common to many psychologists and psychiatrists that obesity is not a strictly somatic problem but rather a psychological one.

People who have eating disorders usually have issues in the core of their personality that cause gaining weight. It is known that depression can lead to weight gain because sufferers from depression engage in comfort eating. People who suffer from social phobia want to lose weight and think that the phobia will be gone. They do not realize that losing weight will not help them feel good about themselves and won't boost up their self-confidence.

People who decide to lose weight should ask themselves why they want to lose weight. The question is where will it lead you emotionally and what do you really want to achieve. You should look deep inside yourself and find the real reasons or work on the reasons why you gained weight in the first place. Also, it is important to determine how to lose it. There are many crash diets that give drastic results and after a certain period of time all those pounds come back. So it is important to choose a safe way to lose weight. Losing weight usually leads to a positive bill of health, but not necessarily. Crash diets and starvation can lead to many heart and kidney problems.

Working only on your appearance might give you external results but losing weight will not make you a happier person.

What is a healthy weight loss?

It is important to determine what an overweight person is and what an obese person is. If you are an individual who thinks that you have to lose weight, it does not necessarily mean that you are overweight. You should consider the amount of fat in your body and where the fat is built in so you can determine if you are overweight. Sometimes people make mistakes and do not consider that their muscles and bones can be quite heavy.

The common way to determine if a person is overweight is to calculate the body mass index (BMI) and waist measurements.

BMI determines how much your weight is related to your body height. Waist measurements show how fat is distributed in the body. People who have BMI over 30 are considered obese and people between 25 and 30 are considered overweight.

Many people who are overweight do not have health problems. Being overweight can cause problems if a person already has some health issues (he or she is ill or has other conditions).

Depending on a person's body mass index and other factors, losing weight can be healthy and necessary. In some cases it is not necessary and can even lead to problems, if not physical then emotional.

If you want to lose weight you should first consult a specialist. It is important that you really have to lose weight and to find a healthy and safe way to do it. Sometimes people confuse dieting and the hygiene of eating. It is a big difference if you are dieting and trying to lose weight by starving yourself and extensively exercising. Dieting might mean that you are changing your life style by changing your eating habits and exercising on a regular basis. It means that you are taking care of yourself and your body and not just exhausting it with diets.

A healthy weight loss is changing something in your life that is keeping you unhappy. Working on the reason why you gained weight in the first place is a good start. The main reasons for weight loss are psychological in nature. A person is usually not aware of them and that is why people want to lose weight for the wrong reasons.

What are some benefits of weight loss?

Being overweight or obese can cause many health problems. Those long-term problems can shorten your life or make it very handicapping. Cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes can be prevented in some cases and if diagnosed before completely developing. Gaining weight can prolong them or even cause them. Some of the reasons why people try to lose weight are, logically, to prevent these illnesses.

The main benefit from losing weight is reducing the risk for all those life threatening diseases. Other benefits that people may feel are feeling healthier all in all and being full of energy. The safest and the healthiest way to lose weight are combining exercise and good nutrition. That will help you increase your fitness. Losing weight is not always going to make you a healthier person. It can cause many other issues you would have to work on. If you use weight-loss drugs, you can suffer from many side effects. A drug called "rimonabant" was suspended because its main side effect is depression. Another drug, called "sibutramine" has some positive effects but they do not state all the harmful side effects like cardiovascular disease, for instance. A drug called "orlistat" causes yellowish skin, itch, darker urine and upper-abdominal symptoms that can all be signs of liver damage.

If you have osteoarthritis in the knees, you can feel an improvement by losing weight. Your weight puts on a lot of pressure on your knees and joints which can cause strong pain. Losing weight releases you from that pressure and pain, while gaining more weight increases the chance of developing osteoarthritis in the first place.

If you suffer from some kind of illness, like type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, losing weight can improve your condition. Your doctor might decide if you should be taking less medication or if you should stop.

There are also some psychological benefits from losing weight. It has been said before that people with weight problems have specific emotional issues that are in the core of their personality. Getting healthier and fit is not only external. People who are on a journey of losing weigh should first of all work on their personality and the problems that caused the weight issues.

How to keep the weight off?

Losing weight with just dieting is not a safe and a healthy way to lose weight. Also, all that weight off will be gained back if the work on the weight problem was superficial. In order to lose weight and to maintain it permanently, the best way is to change certain aspects of a person's life style. It is important to change eating habits and to exercise on a regular basis. In order to make exercising and dieting permanent, a person should find the habit that he or she enjoys most, or the one that is practical to keep up with.

Researches show that people who diet and exercise to lose weight, in comparison to those who only diet, lose 20% more. A year later, all the people who dieted and exercised were still fit.

I need to add that, if you like to walk and you chose walking as your exercise, it is not beneficial for you if you just walk slowly. Moderate-intensity exercise is a rhythm that can give some effects. That means that, if you want your work out to benefit you, your heart rate needs to be increased. You do not have to exercise up until you run out of breath, but you will have to exert yourself at least a little to get some results. Brisk walking is very beneficial, especially to those people who have been very inactive. People who work full-time are recommended to walk briskly for 30 minutes every day (for example to work and from work).

How to stay motivated?

Losing weight is a long term process that has its ups and downs. You should have somebody to encourage you in the process of dieting and exercising. You can get support from your doctor, therapist or your family and friends. You can also join special groups to talk to people who are in the same situation like you and that can understand you the best.

The diet and exercise plans you make should be suited to your state of health. You should consult a specialist to see your options. Sometimes, after you lose a certain amount of weight you reach the peak, where the process stops. In order to continue with your plan and not get discouraged you should start trying something new.

If you start losing strength or will, it is important not to give up. You can call on your past successes and see the reductions in your weight so far. That could help you get motivated again.

For people who are at risk of heart disease and have high cholesterol and sugar levels in their blood, the reduction of those levels in their body does not necessarily mean that they are not at risk any more but it certainly means that they are on the right track. It is encouraging to see levels of cholesterol and sugar going down.

Usually, when people notice losing weight, they feel better emotionally and physically. If you are not satisfied, or you are disappointed with your progress, remember that weight loss is still making you healthier.

Some people expect life to be easier by losing weight which is rather unrealistic. Being overweight causes many problems, but the weight itself is not responsible for all those problems. Getting to know yourself, your body and accepting yourself in general, is more important than losing weight. After being in peace with your inner self, it will be easier to plan your weight loss.

Managed care, pension payments causing problems for community mental health centers; Edelen, C-J call for changes

"Kentucky mental health centers are cutting back services and struggling to assist patients the first time they’re admitted because of ongoing struggles with Medicaid managed care," Don Weber reports for cn|2. "At the same time, they’re losing out on federal grants because of red flags caused by their administration costs being inflated by increasing contributions to the public pension system."

NorthKey Community Care Mental Health Center in Northern Kentucky, which serves eight counties, had to close its adult day-treatment programs for the seriously mentally ill. Dr. Owen Nichols, the president and CEO, told Weber, “I get calls periodically from elderly parents in the community wanting help with their adult child that suffers from schizophrenia because they’re now wandering the streets, having some difficulties with local authorities.”

A recent editorial in The Courier-Journal addresses Kentucky's need for better mental health treatment, saying that Kentucky has "an underfunded, fragmented and now —thanks mostly to Medicaid managed care —hopelessly complicated system of mental health care."

The editorial notes last week's C-J articles in which reporters Laura Ungar and Chris Kenning uncovered the problems families face when navigating a fragmented mental-health system while trying to provide appropriate treatment for a loved one suffering form a severe mental illness, in addition to the "F" grade Kentucky received for its poor mental-health funding.

The editorial also describes how structural issues with managed care, which began in November 2011, have complicated the state's mental-health system. It notes the community mental-health centers asked to be left out of managed care, "pointing out they already operate efficiently and amount to only about 3 percent of the state’s $6 billion a year Medicaid program."

In addition, the editorial notes, "State Auditor Adam Edelen recommended the Cabinet for Health and Family Services take mental health out of managed care and let the state resume running it." Against his advice and the requests of community mental-health centers, the state expanded managed care of mental health. Now some haven’t been paid for Medicaid services since January, when managed care took effect, the editorial says.

"The nightmare needs to end for the many Kentuckians who need basic mental health services," says the editorial. "It’s time for the state to fully explore this system and, if folks are serious about improving it, fix the problems and find the money to fund it." (Read more)

Eye exercises to improve eyesight

Eye, it's an organ that contains light sensitive cells associated with nerve fibers through which the light enter into the eye is converted into nervous impulses and the eye exercise is the one that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of defective eye movement.

Women's continued meth use

Women are more likely to use meth than other drugs and often have a harder time getting free of the drug than men.

Why Women Continue to Use Meth

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug that forms a quick, strong dependency, even with limited use. Once a methamphetamine addiction has begun, it is a very difficult dependency to break, and women face unique challenges in this area. Many women in turn to meth to help them lose weight and have more energy to keep up with the demands of life, including child care, work, and home care.

Many women are unwilling to seek treatment for their meth addiction because they are afraid of having their children taken away from them when their problem is revealed. Many female meth addicts are single moms with no constant father figure in the lives of their children. Addiction is an isolating disease and these women have no one to care for their children while they're in treatment, leaving them with only the option of turning their kids over to the state until they can get clean. Many women feel that it would be better to try to get clean on their own in order to stay with their children.

For those women who do manage to enter a treatment program to address their addiction, the road to recovery is a particularly difficult one. Many women who are being treated for meth leave treatment early because they are worried about their kids. Even those who do finish have a very hard time staying clean at home. The demands of raising children, attending treatment, going to work, and caring for their home cause a level of exhaustion that they feel they can only relieve by returning to meth use. Out of all of the Utah women who have managed to get clean after a meth addiction, most have failed at treatment at least once and returned to using the drug. Many of these women have lost custody of their children and even been to jail, but they still continue to use the drug.

One of the answers to the increasing meth problem in Utah is to make treatment more available to those suffering from addiction, especially women. Treatment programs tailored specifically to meet the needs and address the concerns of women can encourage moms to complete their program. Sober houses where women can live with their children during recovery have been shown to increase the success rate of staying clean after inpatient treatment is completed. Making support groups for women dealing with addiction more available and visible in our communities may also help decrease the rate of relapse.

Milk can lead to anemia

In the event that a child under school age drink more than two glasses of milk a day, his body decreases the amount of iron, which can lead to anemia.

According to the study, which was attended by 1,300 children of preschool age, children should not drink more than two glasses of milk a day. Milk contains calcium and vitamin D, needed for bone growth. However, excessive intake of milk in the body is accompanied by a decrease in the amount of iron, and iron deficiency leads to movement disorders.

Children who drank three or more glasses of milk per day had reduced levels of serum ferritin, which reflects the state of body iron stores. The more milk the children drank, the lower ferritin levels fell.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting consumption of cow's milk for preschoolers to two glasses a day. However, the Committee on Nutrition believe that children who drink at least four glasses of milk a day, should be given supplements of vitamin D. Supplementation with vitamin D is required blacks children and children who spend little time in the sun, because vitamin D is produced in the skin by sunlight.

Cost of Staying Healthy on the Rise

The federal government's approval of a 5.6% increase in health premiums has fuelled controversy and debate and is set to put households under more financial pressure in the coming year. The increase, dubbed by the Health Minister as "modest", translates into a $1.70 increase per week for a single person and $3.70 more for a family. Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says that, by comparison, the increase for consumers is significantly lower than the 9.3% increase being shouldered by insurance companies. The increase is slightly higher than last year's 5.06% hike and will be implemented from April.

The Spokesperson for the Coalition, Peter Dutton, says that this increase, coupled with increases in other government policies, is putting family budgets under immense strain. He says this latest news might be taking the pressure off the government, in terms of comparisons to previous years' performances, but for the average household the news is anything but pleasing.

In defence, the federal government says the health insurance premium increases that have taken place under the current government are lower than those of the previous government. Plibersek claims that during Tony Abbott's tenure as Health Minister the average increase was 6.5%, while one year saw an increase of 8%. She says the government is aware of the increasing cost of living and has encouraged people to compare health insurance memberships to see if they can secure a better deal. She says she expects health insurance memberships to stay strong, with memberships at their highest levels of all time.

Despite the Health Minister's optimism the 30% private health insurance rebate has undergone means testing since July and parliament is currently deliberating dropping subsidies for Lifetime Health Cover loading, applicable to those who do not take out private cover by the time the financial year that they turn 31 in comes around. She encouraged shopping around for competitive rates as policies vary by as much as $200 per policy across different providers.

The Coalition's spokesperson said also that the Labour government's changes had yet to be experienced fully because so many Australians had tried to beat the increases by prepaying their premiums. The Chief Executive Officer of Consumers Health Forum of Australia also agreed that people should renew their cover to see if there was a chance of getting better value.

One in seven people who have private health insurance could be looking at a 27% premium increase in July, if the intended government rebate changes go through. An industry lobby group says that nearly 1.1 million members will be affected by changes to Lifetime Health Cover and for some people the difference amounts to as much as $500.

Along with the annual premium increase of more than 5% the removal of the rebate will see some premiums go up by a third this year. The industry lobby group claims these two events will see people either terminating or downgrading their cover, and putting more pressure on the public hospital system.

Last month a story was carried that claimed the government would be investigating the number of people downgrading their policies and also how easy it is for people to switch policies over if they find a better deal.

In his midyear review the Treasury's Wayne Swan alleged the changes to the rebate system would enable a saving of $1.1 billion (when the Treasurer was still pursuing his budget surplus). But the government has already benefitt4d from the LHC because it has prompted more young people to take out private cover, earlier on in life and offsetting against higher claim costs from older members. The government says the financial impact of dropping the rebate will make a difference of $116 per annum.

Five Reasons You Should Get Vaccinated

From the dawn of time, the human population has periodically been decimated by outbreaks of serious disease. In the 1600s, bubonic plague was rife across Europe and millions perished from the disease. The influenza virus has also been a deadly killer over the centuries and even today, people still die from the more serious strains of the flu. But thankfully for mankind, many of the most serious diseases such as yellow fever, typhoid and diphtheria have been all but eradicated as a result of widespread vaccination programmes.

Why Bother With Vaccinations?

Even though serious diseases such as measles and mumps have mostly been vanquished in modern society, they haven't disappeared completely, which is why vaccination programmes are just as vital today as they were a few decades ago. Without protection from vaccinations, you and your family are at risk of serious disease or even death.

Vaccinations Are Safe

Millions of people are vaccinated every year and even though there are inevitably a small number of people who experience bad reactions to the vaccine, vaccinations are considered to be very safe. All vaccines have been rigorously tested and are among the safest types of medicine available today. You could opt out of a vaccination program, but the risk of suffering any side effects from the vaccine is far smaller than your risk of catching a serious disease.

Vaccines Offer Protection to the Vulnerable

All vaccine preventable diseases are serious. If a healthy adult catches a deadly strain of the influenza virus, they are likely to become extremely ill, but if a vulnerable person with a weakened immune system, a child or someone elderly catches the flu, they are far more likely to die as a result of the disease. Vaccinations offer protection to those most at risk of complications or death from serious diseases, so why die needlessly for the sake of a simple injection?

Vaccines Protect Your Family

When the main breadwinner of a family becomes seriously ill from an entirely preventable disease, it puts their family at risk. An ill person cannot work and if the disease causes life changing complications, the end result can be devastating. You might not think you are at risk of catching a disease such as tuberculosis, but these diseases are still out there and people who shun vaccinations are at risk of infection.

Preventable Disease is a Drain on Society

Treating serious diseases such as influenza, typhoid and cholera costs the economy billions every year. The direct medical costs alone are staggering, but when you take into account the indirect costs of preventable diseases such as influenza, which can cause a reasonably healthy person to be off work for up to two weeks, it is not difficult to see just how important vaccination programmes are in modern society.

Children and Vaccinations

There have been many scare stories surrounding childhood vaccinations and many parents have avoided having their child vaccinated. As a result of a lower take-up of some children's vaccination programmes, certain diseases such as measles and mumps have been making an unwanted return. Vaccine preventable childhood diseases can cause long-term and devastating health problems in children, but thanks to effective childhood vaccination programmes, horrible illness such as polio and whooping cough have all but disappeared. However, if parents decide to boycott vaccination programmes for fear of side effects, it won't be long before such diseases start to reappear once again.

Holiday Vaccinations Are Also Important

For most people heading off on their holidays, thoughts of serious illness and disease are the last thing on their mind, but holiday vaccinations are just as important as any other form of immunisation. Diseases such as hepatitis, yellow fever and diphtheria are rife in some parts of the world and if you become infected, you could end up taking home more than a sun tan.

The Most Salutary Vegetables

Vegetables are doubtless salutary foods. They are rich in crucial nutrients, and another precious benefit they offer is a lot of dietary fibre. That is why it is recommended to consume vegetables in sufficient amounts, with daily quotas of at least five servings. Vegetables enhance people's immunity to diseases that plague humanity.

The most salutary vegetables, according to a number of classifications, comprise tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, eggplants, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, spinach, onions. In fact, the list of healthy vegetables could be continued, but let us dwell on the shortlist of the most salutary ones presented above.

Tomatoes are technically a type of fruit, but they are staples in salads, and their cancer fighting qualities have long been known to people. The vitamins contained in tomatoes are a prerequisite for good health as well.

Broccoli is an outstanding example of a powerfully salutary vegetable. They are packed with lots of antioxidants, and thus instrumental in reducing the hazard of a number of cancer varieties. Thanks to the amount of beta carotene and vitamin C, broccoli is also a natural means of preventing flu and colds.

Carrots are another staple on the table, and another dignified member of the most salutary vegetables' group. The nutrients contained in carrots are strong protectors of the human eyes, skin and hair. Another precious ingredient in carrots, vitamin C, helps people who regularly eat carrots to stay protected from cardiovascular diseases.

Eggplants are another treasure trove of antioxidants, but they are also replete with fiber, and they contain potassium that is why they are pointed out as vegetables that reduce the risk of stroke and the development of dementia.

Bell peppers are not only enjoyable for the eye with the profusion of colours. They are also rich in heart healthy substances, such as lycopene and folic acid. Bell peppers are also indicated as lowering the risk of development of cancer.

Spinach is chlorophyll packed, and also rich in vitamins and nutrients. They are recommended not only as protecting people from heart diseases, but also as lowering the risk of arthritis and osteoporosis.

Onions are welcome in salads, but they have other properties too. They are a healthy choice, especially recommended for people who suffer from osteoporosis, or people who are at risk of developing it. That is due to the content of peptide which is called GPCS and is believed to slow down the loss of calcium in the body. Heart disease risks can also be significantly lowered thanks to onion consumption. People at risk of developing diabetes should also choose onions as a health building food.

Each of the most salutary vegetables has its health boosting properties. Healthy people can combine them in their daily diet, to be certain to keep their health on a good level. People at risk of developing certain diseases should consume sufficient amounts of the salutary vegetable that is the best in fighting the respective condition. But doubtless each person should stick to the list of the above most salutary vegetables when shopping and planning the individual or daily meals.

Guideline to Nutrition and Fitness for Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Different body organs are affected by the slimy mucus created by the cystic fibrosis (CF). Pancreas in our body produces essential digestive enzymes which play a role in food absorption are also prone to be layered by this mucus. Studies reveal that the 85% patients of cystic fibrosis exhibit pancreatic deficiency under the age of 10. The incapacity to absorb essential nutrition before going to the intestine of the body leads to malnutrition and related problems.

Often the CF patients have to take digestive supplements to cure the problems. These supplements essentially aid in absorption of minerals and vitamins in food. CF patients have to consume high calories in addition to the digestive supplements than rest of the healthy people. Therefore, a child suffering from this problem must include high calorie diet along with digestive enzymes prescribed by a physician.

A suitable workout plan is also vital for the CF patient. Eating habits need to be revised properly keeping the time constraint inn mind. A school going child may find difficult to manage his/her eating schedule as per school's timing and therefore, may affect the overall health. CF students may encounter problem in consuming low calorie food and beverages as per the rules of schools and colleges. This is to deal with the alarming situation of obesity in youngsters, but the CF patients have to be watchful in taking their meals as prescribed to them. The CF students should be given big balanced breakfast in morning and the subsequent meals should be rich in complex carbohydrates that take longer to digest and gives energy. A nurse in the school may also talk to the teacher to allow extra lunch breaks to the student because of the health requirements.

Cystic fibrosis is also associated to the lung health. According to studies, patients with good BMI- Body Mass Index as per their weight, age and height pulmonary related tests. Physicians suggest that CF patients should achieve optimal health and BMI level under the age of 6 to minimize the chances of hospitalization because of pulmonary issues.

It is also known that different activities like jumping and running cause pulsation in the heart that may kindle coughing. Coughing is a good sign for the CF patients because it acts a natural chest treatment that helps the body to relieve itself from infectious mucus in lungs. It is also a proven fact that exercise helps to avert infections and lung swelling. Different exercises raise the breathing rate in a human body and strengthen muscles of abs, chest and back which eventually make coughing easier. For treating CF, cardio-pulmonary workouts and aerobics are considered very effective as good amount of oxygen is distributed all over the body.

Parents of CF patients often want a fitness session or a class in their schools. It is not a good option unless a school nurse discusses with the sports teachers or coach about the child's condition to render him/her maximum benefit from the sports activities. Be careful of such activities that may worsen the allergy issues in patients and opt for better alternatives.

Lucrative options can be dance classes, martial arts or other society classes for the CF patients. To improve lungs' health the patients may also join orchestra or musical band classes as different instruments help in recovering and maintaining lung operation. It also proves to be fruitful for the student who applies for college to avail the scholarship offers.

As a result healthy nutrition coupled with exercise can reap long-lasting advantages for the CF patients of all age groups. Different CF Clinics give expert advice on nutrition, diet plans and workouts to assist the patients in best possible manner that can improve their health and fitness.
