Lose the Extra Forever

Stop Starving and Start Living!

In today's culture it is a shameful thing to be overweight and, even if the condition is medical and not the case of a regular couch-potato or a white-collar office rat, people are stigmatized and labeled all the time. The position of the medical professionals is clear being overweight is harmful to one's overall health and it increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes and cancer. However, although it is logical that people would primarily care for their health and not merely for the way they look, in today's culture, it has also become normal that the media dictate not only the standards music, taste, art, beauty and other-wise, but also the standards and the widely accepted values health-wise. Namely, in today's society it is not uncommon to starve oneself for days, weeks or months in order to lose a few extra pounds. It is also a commendable sacrifice considering the overwhelming choice of food fast foods, as well as restaurant made and served foods and the promoted party-goer lifestyle that includes the consumption of alcohol that is certainly above the recommended dosage, both for the health and the body weight. The problems young men and women are facing today are what kind of stance they should take, what lifestyle they should choose should they become gym-goers even though they do not like exercising indoors and only because it is the trendy thing to do? Should one decide to spend their life craving for chocolate or a hamburger, but completely give up on meats, dairies and sweets because there are celebrities talking about it? Is one to starve themselves to thinness at the cost of their health, only because the current pop-culture says it is the preferable thing to do?

There are plenty of choices and plenty of paths before young individuals today and neither is uninfluenced by the culture of esthetic-ideal-frenzy and misconceptions.

Nevertheless, there are certain facts that everyone, young in the body and young in the soul, should bear in mind when finally taking the time to decide on their lifestyle in the long-run, and also certain advice that they should take under consideration.
  • 1. Starving is not dieting!
Starving oneself does not guarantee weight loss at all. In fact, the reality of things is much different. Starving creates the opposite effect of what the person trying to lose weight is doing it activates the stress hormone secretion in the body and completely slows down the metabolic processes. When metabolism is lowered to the bare minimum, everything that we intake is considered a precious substance the body stores it. Now, we usually have problems with particular areas of our bodies whether it is the thighs that we cannot shape the way we want to, or it is the abs that defy the sculptor's efforts and sweat it is genetically predetermined whether one would gain weight quickly or have difficulty losing it, where the deposits would go first or most, etc. We are basically sentenced to being dependent on our genetic code, but not to be enslaved by it! Moreover, we are the ones with the power to change or, at least, modify the way our body functions if your body is slow to burn fat, the decrease of calories you intake and the increase of physical activity cannot fail to reduce the body weight. If your body is more responsive to a particular diet, then it is that diet that you should pursue regardless of whether it is recommended by the celebrity nutritionists, as long as it includes healthy foods and an appropriate mixture of proteins and carbs.

  • 2. Weight loss is a result of a proper diet and exercise!
There are many diets today, protein or carbohydrates based, whose supposed efficiency is even promoted by celebrities worldwide. However, one must always bear in mind that what helps one individual maintain or lose weight, or better yet, speed up the metabolic processes, need not work for another. Therein lays the main problem in today's world, which relies on quick fixes for the most part. What is very difficult for some people to accept is that there are no easy and quick solutions to the problem of their bodies being different than the current, though rather changeable, standard of body-beautiful.

Very often people disregard the fact that they are the ones who know themselves and their body best. Therefore, any diet or regimen can be figured out easily by mere observation. It is widely known that the best foods to speed up one's metabolism are green raw vegetables in combination with protein rich, but low fat meats. It may not be a strict diet promoted by a famous actor, but it can be your personalized combination that gives best results. Namely, with an appropriate amount of exercise, which should, by the by, be moderate and with plenty of resting time, and a regimen that is restrictive enough to prevent you from taking in too many calories, but not to leave you craving for your favorite food, the results will not be disappointing. Moreover, with balanced diet and exercise, there will not only be changes in the size of your body, but there will be visible change in the way the body reacts to food, physical activity overall, sleep and stress and the changes will be positive! From the improvement of one's mood to the improvement of the body image, there will not be a better incitement to continue at the same, or even at a quicker pace!

  • 3. Do not despair! The change is not supposed to come overnight! Drink your water!
Many people hope and pray even that the stored deposits of fat simply vanish from their bodies as if it did not take years for them to be stored and forgotten there in the first place. It may actually be the worst enemy of all those who are trying to lose those extra pounds forever.

Let me break it to you it is virtually impossible to lose all that weight over a short period of time in a way that is healthy for you and in a way that will not produce the yo-yo effect soon after.

Just think about it your only way of cleansing yourself is to start by burning the excess. That means that you should not take in more than absolutely necessary, more than the bare minimum of nutritive substances. However, there are also toxins and all kinds of waste that has to be flushed out you need plenty of water! And you need to drink it in such a way so as not to make yourself sick!

Water is what will help you not only get rid of the waste and the toxins, but also what will help you additionally speed up your metabolism  drink it cold! It will help with the digestion as well, as long as you eat food that is not processed and that is sugar-free (as you well should!).

It is very important to maintain a routine and not to stray too much from it. However, do not allow your diet and exercising to take over your life you had a life before the major decision and you made the decision because you wanted to improve your life! Do not allow for your hobbies and other (healthy) habits and practices to become neglected. That includes your friends. Instead, try asking for support from your family and friends and make sure that they understand why you are making such an effort to change your life. Who knows! Maybe you will inspire someone close to you to take up a sport or change their eating habits.

  • 4. Take seriously only the reason you made the decision in the first place and not yourself!
It will not be the end of the world if you break the rules once in a while, but just think about the work and the effort you have then wasted. Do not take the decision to live a healthier life as a sentence your goal is not to become thin and then return to where you started. No! Your goal is to establish a new pattern of behavior and change your complete lifestyle dieting differently, drinking differently yes, that means no, or very little alcohol, and yes, wine is an alcoholic beverage and the same goes for beer and exercising regularly, will lower your stress levels, increase your tolerance to stress and improve your general health by enhancing your body's ability to fight disease. Not to mention that your new improved immune system will be more powerful against the seasonal colds and the flu, but also cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, and we all know that this is of the essence today!

The famous diet master cleanse uses natural weight loss supplements

With it still being early in the new year, many people might still have body improvement on their minds. If you are looking for an easy way to lose some weight, then you may be interested in a detox diet like the master cleanse, or lemonade diet.

You will be glad to know that there are only a few ingredients needed in order to prepare the detox drink mixture. It is great to keep in mind that it only uses natural weight loss supplements and it is important to make sure all the ingredients you add are organic. The whole goal of the master cleanse after all is to rid your body of unwanted toxins and foreign substances.

First, you will need pure filtered water. This is very important that it be pure filtered water and not some other kind of water. Often overlooked as being able to be substituted, pure filtered water is the most important ingredient if you want to cleanse your body. The normal practice is to add chlorine into drinking water in order to get rid of contaminants. Chlorine isn't all that good for your body and you should be careful not to drink too much water that contains it. You may be thinking about using bottled water instead but this isn't a good choice either because first of all it can be pricey and second of all the manufacturing process for bottled water isn't very well regulated. That being said, the bottle water you buy might simply be tap water. This surprised me greatly as one who used to only drink bottled water. In order to obtain all the benefits of the master cleanse drink it is vitally important to use pure filtered water. You can buy this filtered water at your local grocery store or you may choose to invest in your own filter that you can have in the comfort of your own home.

Second, you will add Grade B Organic Maple Syrup. Be sure that it is Formaldehyde free. This syrup has been said to contain many compounds that are very good for human health. Among these compounds include phenolics, which are very powerful antioxidants that help protect the body against cancer, diabetes and other bacterial infections.

Third, you will need organic cayenne pepper. This powerful ingredient is known for its anti-irritant properties, it being an anti cold & flu agent, its anti-allergen properties and it being a digestive aid.

Fourth, you will need to add organic lemons. Don't under any circumstance use concentrated lemon juice. That is loaded with sugar and preservatives. If you need to substitute something, just get a regular non-organic lemon.

Lastly, you will need sea salt. Make sure this is unrefined and not iodized. Believe it or not, the salt is used in this solution as a laxative.

So all in all the ingredients for the master cleanse diet are very common and easy to get ahold of. Since the nature of the cleanse is to rid your body of toxins and foreign material, make sure the ingredients you put into the drink are as natural as possible.

The Diet for your Blood Pressure Issues

If you have been diagnosed with having high blood pressure (which basically means the top number being 140 or more and the bottom number - 90 or above) that means living a life with one top priority in mind - to keep these numbers in their normal states. However, a lot of people are reluctant to doing this with the help of certain medications. A smart, safe, efficient and above all - relatively simple way of fighting high blood pressure is to change your lifestyle. And most importantly - your diet. If you keep your diet as healthy and free of bad substances as possible, you are most likely to delay, reduce or even avoid the need for using medications. Here are some practical tips on how you can do so.

1.Lose those annoying extra pounds and keep a strict eye on your waistline
As weight increases, blood pressure increases as well. However, if you lose as much as five kilos, you will help your body reduce blood pressure. On the other hand, the medications you take will be far more effective if your weight is lowered. Keep an eye on your waist line as the more weight you carry, the worse for your blood pressure levels. In general terms, men are risk, provided that their waistline is more than 100cm. As for women, that number is 90cm.

2.Eat healthy
Plan your diet in such a way, that it consists of a good amount of vegetables, low-fat dairy products, fruits, whole grains, etc. That is sure to change your life for good. And if you stick to your diet plan, your blood pressure will be lowered by up to 14mm Hg. Eating habits are built throughout the years and are usually difficult to change. However, once you realize that changing your diet is of crucial importance, making that change will seem less difficult to you.
-Keep a food diary - Monitoring what you eat is the best way to actually see what you have to get rid of from your daily menu.
-Boost potassium - It will lessen the sodium effect on your blood pressure. The best sources of potassium are fruits and vegetables rather than supplements. Consult your doctor about what potassium levels are best for you.
-Be smart when shopping - Before you head for the store, make yourself a list, and make it one that is free of any junk foods.

3.Reduce the level of sodium in your diet
Even a slight reduction of the sodium in your meals can lead to positive results - reducing your blood pressure from 3 to 7 mm Hg. Here are the recommendations:
-Limit sodium up to 2,000 milligrams, or less, a day.
-For people, aged 51 or more, the appropriate sodium level is not more than1,500 miligrams a day.
In order to reduce the level of sodium in your diet, consdier doing the following:
Read the food labels - buy low-sodium alternatives alternatives to the foods you usually buy
Eat as little processed foods as possible - all those bagged, so called 'junk foods' are bad for you, if you don't already know it.
Restrain from using salt - if you feel your food is rather tasteless, add different sorts of herbs instead of salt.

4.Limit alcohol
As a matter of fact, alcohol in small quantities is good for your health. However, just like with many other things, it is supposed to be taken with moderation. Especially for men and women over the age of 65, alcohol should be limited to a bare minimum. Suggested daily alcohol levels, described as 'one drink a day', are something in the lines of : 360mililitres of beer or 150 milliliters of wine or 50 milliliters of hard liquor.

5.Say no to tobacco
Nicotine is dangerous for pretty much everything you can imagine, including your blood pressure level. Smoking can actually raise the blood pressure with 10 mm Hg. Smoking throughout all the day will mean to constantly maintain high blood pressure. Do your best to cut back on this nasty habit.

Genetic risk of obesity Sugary drinks

For people who are genetically predisposed to obesity, drinking a lot of sugary beverages could make their weight problem worse by heightening the effects of their obesity genes, a new study suggests.

"Almost everyone carries some genetic risk of obesity," says Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and an author on the study.

"People who carry a lot of obesity genes have a higher risk. People who drink a lot of soda also have a higher risk of obesity. For people who have both, their risk of obesity is much greater than either factor alone," he says.

To come to these conclusions, researchers examined data on 6,934 women from the Nurses' Health Study; 4,423 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study; and 21,740 women from the Women's Genome Health Study. Participants in all three studies were of European ancestry; genetic profiles were available on all of them, which allowed scientists to look at the 32 genes associated with obesity.

All participants completed questionnaires on their food and beverage intake over time. Sugar-sweetened beverages included sugary soft drinks, fruit drinks and lemonade. Not included: 100% fruit juice, iced coffee or iced tea.

The participants were divided into categories: those who consumed less than one serving a month of sugar- sweetened beverages; one to four servings a month; between two and six servings a week; one or more servings a day. Researchers made calculations that accounted for participants' overall dietary quality, physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption. The dietary quality score includes dietary fats, meat intake, fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

Findings: The risk of becoming obese as a result of carrying a high dose of obesity genes was more than twice as great in the group with the highest intake of sugary beverages as it was for the lowest intake group, says lead author Lu Qi, assistant professor in the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health. This means that regular consumption of sugary beverages magnified the genetic risk of becoming too heavy, he says.

The study is being published online Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine, and Qi is presenting it Friday at the annual meeting of Obesity Society in San Antonio.

"This study indicates that unhealthy diet choices, such as drinking a lot of sugary beverages, can affect how the genes are expressed," Hu says. "Although genetic makeup influences obesity risk, the trigger of the genetic effects may lie in our environment."

Other genetic experts offer a word of caution on interpreting the results. It's hard to know if it's just the sugary beverages that are to blame for the increased genetic susceptibility or if it was influenced by other unhealthy lifestyle factors, says Ruth Loos, director of the Genetics of Obesity and Related Metabolic Traits Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. People who drink sugary beverages "tend to be less physically active, have a higher caloric intake and a poorer diet in general," she says. This is illustrated in the new study, she says.

Still, Loos says, there's no reason for people to get discouraged and blame their genes for their weight woes. She has done research that shows that being physical active lowers your risk of obesity, even more so in people with a high genetic susceptibility. Her study and this new one "show that your genetic susceptibility to obesity can be reduced by living a healthy lifestyle," she says.

Why a pill just won't cut it

You can't turn on the television, open a web browser, or read the newspaper without an advertisement or study telling you a new way to be healthy. One study says chocolate will help you lose weight, another says it's all genetic anyway - how do you ever know what to believe? One way to think about it is to think about a time not too long ago before fad dieting and obesity were daily topics of conversation. How did your grandmother eat? How did her mother feed her? Many believe our ancestors were much healthier than we are today, and one way to boost our own health may be to mimic those diets. One thing they certainly didn't consume back then: dietary supplements and vitamins.

It may seem like popping a calcium pill is a great, easy way to get your nutrients. Maybe it even sounds more appetizing than having some yogurt. But did you know that a study by the British Medical Journal found a connection between taking calcium supplements and thirty percent rise in the risk of suffering a heart attack. That risk was not seen in those who got their calcium the old fashioned way - by ingesting it in their food - or in people who also took vitamin D with their calcium.

Another major drawback of going the supplement route is the risk that you will encounter adverse side effects. One report found that excessive amounts of vitamin A supplements can cause headaches and birth defects, lower bone strength and can even cause liver damage. Zinc has been associated with nausea, vomiting, and internal organ damage.

Supplements can also have interactions with your prescription medications. For example, blood-thinning medication and vitamin K can be a dangerous combination, potentially increasing risk for blood clots. Vitamins E and C may decrease the effectiveness of chemotherapy. So if you're taking a prescription and you add a dietary supplement to your daily regimen, you may find yourself experiencing some unexpected and unpleasant reactions.

What does all of this tell us? It's hard to say exactly, except that when you pop a pill, you don't really know what the effects will be. Something else you don't know: what's actually in that pill. While the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture technically regulate what can and cannot appear on a food label, there is no government regulator out there keeping track of what a dietary supplement's label out there. So the health claims made on those bottles could be - and some likely are - entirely made up out of thin air. Is that the kind of product you want to buy? Probably not.

The truth is that we can get all the nutrients we need by eating a balanced diet that relies on a variety of foods and food groups. And food offers a lot of great things that you can't buy in a pill. It brings people together; it teaches us about new cultures; it tastes good. Why would you want to skip all of those benefits for a questionably beneficial supplement? Especially when that supplement comes in a non-regulated bottle and costs money? Do yourself, your wallet, and your taste buds a favor and skip that morning dose.

  • Fact: It is a "must" for weight watchers to control their calorie intake
For those that are embarking on losing weight, there is a dire need for them to control their calorie intake. One therefore ought to take calories that correspond to their physical activity. Failure to do this will lead to accumulation of calories in the body, which will in return cause an increase in weight gain.
  • Myth: You must always have breakfast
  • Fact: It is not a "must" to have breakfast, you can eat sometime in the morning
This is due to the fact that, whenever we wake up it is unlikely that we feel hungry. Having breakfast in the morning will only help in jump starting your metabolism. It is therefore recommended that, one should eat something after 1-2 hours. This will ensure that, they will not feel hungry till the next meal. Nevertheless, one should ensure that they have their breakfast for failure to do so will lead to one feeling extremely hungry during the day. Consequently, they will have to overeat in their next meal, thus leading to more calorie intake.

Similarly, eating too many times a day will lead to increased calorie intake. It is a good idea to practice portioned-controlled eating, such as the one recommended by Diet to Go, Nutrisystem and many other proven diet companies that believe in eating small portions several times a day.
  • Myth: Avoid eating foods that are rich in fat
  • Fact: Foods that are full of fats make you feel full, hence preventing you from overeating
Even though eating foods that are rich in fats may lead to weight gain, the right kinds of fat are an important element in the body. This is partly due to the fact that they give one a sense of fullness which in turn stops you from overeating. Consequently, this will ensure there is no increased calorie intake.

Upon knowing these weight loss myths and facts alongside significant others, there is no nothing that will stand on your way to weight loss.

How to Lose Weight Exercising for 30 Minutes a Day

How to Lose Weight and Look Glowing by Exercising for 30 Minutes a Day

Most of us work around a daily schedule that is so time-constrained you barely have enough time to come up for air. If you're not dashing to the office you're hunched in front of your PC; if you're not at your desk you're rushing to pick the kids or a bag of groceries. So really, even that half an hour we commit to getting into shape is quite a sacrifice. But if we're not careful, that 30 minute timeslot could end up entirely wasted with us either maintaining our body weight or even regressing without knowing it. The only way to benefit from a training session at the gym or elsewhere is to ensure that more calories are burnt than have been ingested. If this is not happening then we may well channel those precious minutes into something else. So check your exercise regime; ask yourself if your routine is helping you burn enough calories to make a difference on your waistline. Ask yourself...

Should I change my walking routine?

If you've been faithfully walking for half an hour every day for a while now and are not seeing any changes on the weighing scale, maybe it's time you tweaked your motions. Up the intensity by incorporating more pronounced arm movement, increasing your tempo or elongating your stride. It's easy to lull yourself into a comfortable pace when walking; the key is to apply your mind and keep your body tight. Ensure that you feel the strain in your calves and hamstrings as you walk. If you want to feel it a bit more in your upper body, you could incorporate light weights. Interspersing your walk with lunges will help you put additional strain on your leg muscles, helping you burn more within that 30 minute window than you did before.

Try circuit training or interval training

Incorporating any one of these modes of working out is guaranteed to lift you out of your weight loss plateau and increase your gains significantly. Here is an example of how you can work interval training into your limited exercise time. Start off with a light jog or brisk walk for five minutes. Once you're warmed up, launch into a set of 50-100 jumping jacks or jump rope for about 5 minutes. Ease off into a light jog as you catch your breath then do another set of jumping jacks. Alternate in this manner until your half an hour is up. To really work your body and maximize calorie burn, you can mix these cardiovascular exercises with strength training routines in what is known as circuit training. Using the above template, you could throw in a few sets of push-ups and sit-ups. Research has shown that increased muscle mass leads to a higher metabolic rate which results in more lost calories.

Try weight training

Since your time is highly constrained and going out of your way to a gym might not be feasible, consider buying a few dumbbells and using them to do some light weight training. With these you can develop a simple daily routine that hits all major muscle groups in your body. You can do a few sets of bicep curls, a couple of shoulder press sets and some sets of squats or lunges early in the morning before you shower and begin your day.

Overweight Women Experience Obesity

Overweight women face a multitude of hardships - such as discrimination in the workplace - that arise from the stigma surrounding obesity. While weight loss may seem like the solution for women hoping to escape anti-fat prejudice, it may not be that simple after all.

New research out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, The University of Manchester and Monash University, has revealed that anti-fat prejudice still persisted against former obese women, even after they had lost a significant amount of weight.

Previous research has shown that the harmful nature of obesity stigma crossed many domains, Dr. Janet Latner, the study's lead author at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, told FoxNews.com. So we designed an experiment to look at whether obesity sting persisted once the weight had been dropped.

Published in the journal Obesity, the study asked young men and women participants to read various stories about a woman who had lost about 70 pounds, or a woman who was currently obese or thin who had remained stable. The participants were then asked to rate the women's attractiveness and then give their opinions on fat people in general.

Negative attitudes toward the obese targets also seemed to increase when the participants were falsely told that the person's weight was easily controllable.

Though the researchers cannot explain exactly why the findings were the way they were, Latner and her colleagues theorized that people are perhaps more judgmental towards the obese, because they believe that it is something the person can easily manage.

Because of their staggering findings, Latner and her team agree that government intervention is necessary to reduce the prejudice against the overweight and obese.

According to Latner, while obesity is important to combat in today's society, obesity stigma is just as important to address, because its persistence could deter overweight women from shedding the pounds.

Eating more Fruits and Vegetables

It's almost June, which means you have a little more than six months to finally complete that New Year's weight loss resolution. Now a study offers two simple changes that may help you reach your goal: Stop sitting in front of the television and start eating more fruits and vegetables.

While these health tips might seem obvious, it's their long-term sustainability that has scientists praising their virtues. According to the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine study published in the May 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, by making these adjustments you'll be more likely to maintain these habits to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Sedentary lifestyle tied to diabetes, heart disease, premature death: Is TV to blame?
Sitting too much may double your risk of dying, study shows

"Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," Dr. Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said in a press release. "Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart disease and cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," Spring said. "This approach simplifies it."

In the study, 204 adult patients between the ages of 21 to 60 with elevated saturated fat and low fruit and vegetable intake, high sedentary leisure time and low physical activity were placed in one of four treatment categories. One group had to increase fruit and vegetable intake, another had to decrease fat and sedentary leisure, yet another decrease fat and increase physical activity (otherwise known as traditional dieting) and the last group had to increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure. Patients had to record their daily results for three weeks and were coached remotely through mobile technology. If the patients met their goals and displayed healthy lifestyle changes, they would receive $175.

On average, daily fruit and vegetable intake increased from 1.2 servings to 5.5 servings, sedentary leisure time decreased from 219.2 minutes per day to 89.3 minutes, and daily saturated fat decreased from 12.0 percent to 9.5 percent of calories consumed. The group that participated in traditional dieting reported fewer improvements than the other groups.

Then, the participants were given the option of continuing to report their lifestyle. They did not have to keep up with the dietary or exercise recommendations and would receive monthly payments just for turning in their data three times each month for six months.

Ninety-eight percent of the test subjects opted to continue with the second 20-week phase of the study. Out of the 185 people who continued on, 86.5 percent said they tried to "definitely" or "somewhat" maintain what they did in the three-week treatment period even without the financial or mobile encouragement.

What's even more surprising is they seemed to maintain the healthy habits of eating more fruits and vegetables and decreasing sedentary activity without receiving any financial incentive to do so. Though the patients did not increase their healthy behaviors in the six month follow-up, they made "substantial" improvements in watching less television and eating more vegetables compared with their rates when the study started. It is worth noting, however, that those who traditionally dieted for the most part did not carry healthy habits through the second part of the experiment, especially when it came to increasing physical activity.

"We said we hope you'll continue to keep up these healthy changes, but you no longer have to keep them up to be compensated," Spring said. "We thought they'd do it while we were paying them, but the minute we stopped they'd go back to their bad habits," she said. "But they continued to maintain a large improvement in their health behaviors."

The results suggest that even a short period of encouraging healthy lifestyles through coaching and incentives may have a lasting effect. Considering that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of U.S. adults - 35.7 percent - are obese, and obesity has been linked to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, taking these simple steps could make a big difference.

Can You Be Fit and Fat?

YES: In fact, it's a worthy goal.
Steven Blair, PED, professor of exercise science, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of South Carolina

It's better than being thin and unfit.
Overweight people who exercise just 150 minutes a week have half the risk of mortality of normal-weight people who don't exercise at all, according to research I conducted. That's not true once you move from overweight (meaning a body mass index, or BMI, of 25 to 29.9) to obese (a BMI of 30 or more). But being fit and a little fat seems to be fine.
Weight alone doesn't raise disease risk-lack of fitness does.
In one study, half of overweight adults and one-third of obese people who were active had normal blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar, putting them at normal risk for heart disease and diabetes, which are both supposedly caused by weight.

Getting fit is more realistic than getting slim.
For most people, diets don't work in the long term. We ought to be thinking about different strategies. It's far easier for a fat person to get fit than thin.

You can't be obese and fit.
Unless you're in that tiny fraction of the population-like pro athletes or the very muscular-whose muscle mass explains their high BMI. For most people with a BMI of 30 or more, their fitness is reduced by their weight, and their risk of conditions like diabetes and heart disease goes up.

Exercise doesn't erase all the risks of being heavy.
Yes, physical activity is important, but so is watching what you eat. Most studies show that both diet and exercise are important for diabetes prevention, for instance. And a study in the journal Obesity suggests that people with the highest BMIs have unhealthy eating habits.

Playing down the problem of excess weight is dangerous.
If you're heavy, you can cut your mortality risk by eating well and exercising-but research suggests that even active obese people are at 91% greater risk of dying than active people of normal weight.

Fitness Inspiration for Cancer Patients

Those who have cancer may feel like the treatments are more draining than the disease itself. These can sap their energy, making them feel weak and tired all of the time. They may even feel nauseous and sick. This is not the way that they want to live, and they will be glad to know that it is not the way that they have to live. Something that many people do not realize is that exercise can really help them to overcome these feelings. It can help them to regain their strength and to feel better.
Increased Strength
First of all, exercise can help them by increasing their muscle mass and making them physically stronger. The body will be weak already, so this strength can help them to feel like they are able to be more active. They will be able to do more things, showing them that their life can still be as fulfilling as they desire.

Better Blood-Flow and a Higher Heart Rate
Any exercise gets the heart working. This helps to prevent blood clots and other such problems. The rising heart rate can also make them feel less lethargic. This is one of the reasons that cancer patients have been shown to have a lower risk of a reoccurrence of cancer if they are exercising frequently.

An Improved Outlook
Exercise can just help people to feel better in an emotional sense. They will be more awake and alert. This will improve their mood. It can also help them to connect with those around them.

The Best Exercises
Some exercises are ideal for cancer survivors. One such exercise is simply stretching. Increased flexibility helps with blood flow and allows more exercises to be possible. Resistance training with weights or machines is also a good idea since patients will have often lose muscle mass during their treatment. They could also have gained fat, and having larger muscles will help them to burn it off. As they start to feel better, aerobic exercises such as walking or swimming are encouraged. These can also help to reduce fat.

How To Stay Motivated
When someone is not feeling well, it can be hard for them to want to do anything, let alone work out. They need to keep the positives in mind so that they can be encouraged to continue working out. They need to set goals for themselves. Even small goals, such as walking for a mile, can be helpful. Furthermore, they could reward themselves when they accomplish certain things. They should also think of exercise as a way of showing cancer that it cannot rule their life.

Many doctors and patients have noticed the benefits of exercise and healthy living throughout cancer treatment. Many hospitals have open fitness classes, and some gyms offer course designed for cancer patients or survivors. No matter what, patients with an unfavorable cancer prognosis, lean towards some sort of exercise routine. They are fun, social, and exciting ways to learn how to challenge the body.

Tai chi classes make exercise accessible to people of all fitness levels

Few things are as important to maintaining overall health as getting regular exercise. Physical activity helps a person keep unwanted pounds away and it works out the cardiovascular system, which reduces the risk of heart disease.

Still, many people find it difficult to find activities that suit their interests or ability levels. For these individuals, tai chi exercises may be just the thing they need to maintain their health without forcing them into uncomfortable situations.

Tai chi exercises involve slow, calculated movements that are done while trying to achieve a calm state of mind. Because the workout is so low-impact, just about anyone can participate, including seniors and individuals who have not exercised for many years.
Just because the workout regimen is low-impact does not mean that is has little effect on a person's health. In fact, it is just the opposite. Participating in tai chi classes often leads to major cardiovascular and respiratory benefits. Furthermore, individuals are less likely to experience mental disorders like depression. Practitioners say the workout has a profound effect.

"It keeps you fit. I think it creates a lot more energy for me," Terry Lorenz, who recently started a tai chi club in Georgia, told the Savannah Morning News. "I was never a runner or lifted weights. I played baseball all my life and I was looking for something to replace that. It's worked well."

He added that most workout regimens focus on building specific muscles. Individuals will lift weights or do other thing to target each muscle of the body separately. However, tai chi is different in that it seeks to improve the fitness of the body as a whole. For this reason, exercises involve the entire body.

These types of benefits may be particularly important for seniors, who often have difficultly participating in vigorous physical activities. Tai chi can provide them with another option that is just as effective a workout but is less strenuous physically.

While most people think that they need to work themselves hard in order to gain any benefit from exercising, this is simply not the case. Low-impact workouts like tai chi exercises can enable individuals to gain the same physical health benefits of more intensive workouts like running or biking without the heavy demands on the body.

In this way, even individuals who previously thought they were not fit enough for exercise can gain the important health benefits of physical activity.

Dahn Yoga is one of the largest yoga and tai chi companies in the world with its own unique style and brand of yoga. Dahn Yoga is rooted in the rich history of an ancient Asian mind-body practice, Sun Do, and in the wisdom of the Chun Bu Kyung.
