Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and urban water conservation and waste (ISWA) of the German University of Stuttgart has established its sewage treatment plant Stuttgart-Büsnau experimental pilot plant,

in which can be studied purification by trickling in high temperature conditions. The results of this project, supported by the German Federal Ministry

of Education and Research (BMBF), could help developing

countries in developing this purification technology already widely used in temperate zones.
The technique of trickling filter is one of the oldest methods of wastewater treatment. It consists of flowing water to be treated by means of a rotary distributor in a concrete backwash sand filter tank provided with vent holes and filled with a permeable material. The continuous supply of nutrients allows the growth of microorganisms. These adhere to the surface of the filling material and form a biofilm, by means of which the organic substrates in water is degraded. An unlimited supply of nutrients, backwash sand filter however, can cause an overgrowth of biofilm, backwash sand filter which can lead to bottlenecks and reduced aeration. Then form zones of anoxia causing odors and decreased performance. High temperatures, which accelerate the growth of microorganisms including, amplify this phenomenon.
Design backwash sand filter methods trickling facilities used in Europe and America are keyed to temperate temperatures and do not take into account climatic differences. If these approaches are transferred to developing countries with hot climates, the stations become oversized and expensive. To fill this gap and study the techniques of purification trickling backwash sand filter in hot, ISWA scientists have developed a semi-industrial trickling in a climate chamber. By the means of heat exchangers, the air temperature is maintained at 30 C and that of water at 25 C. To compare backwash sand filter different filling backwash sand filter materials, researchers backwash sand filter conduct their experiments on parallel slag and synthetic material.
To analyze the results, the scientists compared the performance curves of the experimental stations with those of conventional German backwash sand filter design. They, among others, found that the mere consideration of the removal of CO2 reduces by 60% the volume of the trickling filter installation, which allows backwash sand filter stations to build cheaper in countries with hot climate . In addition, the method is simple, reliable, has fewer parts subject to wear, and is therefore particularly suitable for use in developing countries.
