Similarly, many other risks related to the vision and eye is reported by the medical professionals. This specific article is mainly focused on highlighting some major eye or vision problems occur in diabetes condition.

Major eye complications during diabetes

Many eye problems have been diagnosed in people who have got diabetes problem. Some of the major ones are described below:
  • Glaucoma: This specific disease includes the development of high pressure inside the eye which further damages the optic nerve in a major way. It also leads to the appearance of blind spots in later stage of this disease. It is to be noted that no significant symptom or sign is really observed in the case of glaucoma until there is no any major nerve damage or blindness is felt by the patient.
  • Cataract: It is one of the common eye disorders being noticed among many diabetic patients. The symptoms of cataract also occur by the age. The Diet for your Blood Pressure Issues

If you have been diagnosed with having high blood pressure (which basically means the top number being 140 or more and the bottom number - 90 or above) that means living a life with one top priority in mind - to keep these numbers in their normal states. However, a lot of people are reluctant to doing this with the help of certain medications. A smart, safe, efficient and above all - relatively simple way of fighting high blood pressure is to change your lifestyle. And most importantly - your diet. If you keep your diet as healthy and free of bad substances as possible, you are most likely to delay, reduce or even avoid the need for using medications. Here are some practical tips on how you can do so.

1.Lose those annoying extra pounds and keep a strict eye on your waistline
As weight increases, blood pressure increases as well. However, if you lose as much as five kilos, you will help your body reduce blood pressure. On the other hand, the medications you take will be far more effective if your weight is lowered. Keep an eye on your waist line as the more weight you carry, the worse for your blood pressure levels. In general terms, men are risk, provided that their waistline is more than 100cm. As for women, that number is 90cm.

2.Eat healthy
Plan your diet in such a way, that it consists of a good amount of vegetables, low-fat dairy products, fruits, whole grains, etc. That is sure to change your life for good. And if you stick to your diet plan, your blood pressure will be lowered by up to 14mm Hg. Eating habits are built throughout the years and are usually difficult to change. However, once you realize that changing your diet is of crucial importance, making that change will seem less difficult to you.
-Keep a food diary - Monitoring what you eat is the best way to actually see what you have to get rid of from your daily menu.
-Boost potassium - It will lessen the sodium effect on your blood pressure. The best sources of potassium are fruits and vegetables rather than supplements. Consult your doctor about what potassium levels are best for you.
-Be smart when shopping - Before you head for the store, make yourself a list, and make it one that is free of any junk foods.

3.Reduce the level of sodium in your diet
Even a slight reduction of the sodium in your meals can lead to positive results - reducing your blood pressure from 3 to 7 mm Hg. Here are the recommendations:
-Limit sodium up to 2,000 milligrams, or less, a day.
-For people, aged 51 or more, the appropriate sodium level is not more than1,500 miligrams a day.
In order to reduce the level of sodium in your diet, consdier doing the following:
Read the food labels - buy low-sodium alternatives alternatives to the foods you usually buy
Eat as little processed foods as possible - all those bagged, so called 'junk foods' are bad for you, if you don't already know it.
Restrain from using salt - if you feel your food is rather tasteless, add different sorts of herbs instead of salt.

4.Limit alcohol
As a matter of fact, alcohol in small quantities is good for your health. However, just like with many other things, it is supposed to be taken with moderation. Especially for men and women over the age of 65, alcohol should be limited to a bare minimum. Suggested daily alcohol levels, described as 'one drink a day', are something in the lines of : 360mililitres of beer or 150 milliliters of wine or 50 milliliters of hard liquor.

5.Say no to tobacco
Nicotine is dangerous for pretty much everything you can imagine, including your blood pressure level. Smoking can actually raise the blood pressure with 10 mm Hg. Smoking throughout all the day will mean to constantly maintain high blood pressure. Do your best to cut back on this nasty habit.

Know Your Numbers with Omron Health Monitors!

Do you often experience dizziness due to low blood sugar or nausea due to hypertension? Are you a regular dieter who needs to keep a check on his weight fluctuations? Whatever be the reason, you cannot always manage to rush to the nearby doctor and get yourself assessed. At such times, it seems wise to invest in health monitors for self-check of different medical parameters.

With health monitors, you can do a quick self-check of your BP, blood sugar level, weight and other body values. Health monitors come handy during emergencies and also help prevent them. Regular checking gives you an idea on what measures you must take with regard to diet, medication adjustment or medical help.

Set Up a Mini Home Clinic
Thermometers are commonplace in most people's homes. With changing times, there is an increased awareness of medical science, increase in the number of disease sufferers and upsurge in the medical device innovation. All these necessitate that people invest in other medical monitoring devices as well. Such a proactive stance towards health may go a long way in improving the overall state of health.

It is important to buy medical devices of a reputed brand. Omron, J & J and GE Healthcare are some good brands to count upon. Omron sells a variety of health monitoring devices like blood pressure monitor, electronic fever thermometer, body fat monitor and respiratory therapy devices. Omron's range of health monitors is scientifically manufactured, accurate, sophisticated and user-friendly.

Dizzying Changes in Blood Sugar?
Diabetes is grasping all of the world population in its clutches. It is one of the top diseases as per the latest WHO reports. Blood sugar fluctuation is critical to the health of a diabetic. It becomes inevitable for diabetics to buy a self-check blood sugar monitor that is easy to read either by themselves or relatives.

BP Surging and Plummeting?
Blood pressure if not regulated can rise to values capable of causing a heart attack or stroke. Similarly, they can fall to dangerous levels that can induce a state of coma in an individual. Hypertensive patients on a dose of medications are at a risk of experiencing both, if they are not regular with their doses or if there is some sort of a trigger. Omron offers stylish and easy-to-use BP monitors for hypertensive patients.

Now Tummy in - Now Tummy out!
Have you been in such a dilemma where you felt unable to gauge your current weight and would worry incessantly about it? This is very common in young women and those on a weight loss regimen trying to trim down the excess weight. Moreover, obesity is becoming a nuisance in these times with every other person searching for fad diets in a bid to look the best. The Omron body composition monitor is clinically validated and analyses your body fat, BMI and visceral fat. It also provides classification of each of these parameters so that you know whether you belong to the overweight or obese class, for instance. Nowadays, a number of health clinics are springing up. Such small enterprises too need to invest in good quality digital fat analyzers.

Good Quality Nebulizers for Asthmatics
Asthmatics are dependent on nebulizers for survival. With Omron, you don't have to worry about the reliability of the nebulizers. These are developed with the help of respiratory therapists for patients suffering from asthma, chronic bronchitis and allergies. These are long-lasting, portable and put you at ease wherever you are. Omron also offers other accessories for this purpose.

Accurate Fever Measurements
A thermometer is the most basic medical equipment that any home must have. A fever is a common symptom in most diseases. Even an old, uneducated or scientifically naïve person must learn how to use a digital thermometer since very high body temperature signal an emergency and calls for immediate medical help. Omron's basic thermometer is simple and easy-to-use by the patient.

Nowadays, with uncertainty lurking in our life and sudden popping up of medical emergencies, health monitors are worth a buy. These health monitors tell us where we stand with regard to our numbers.

Obese 'lose memory sooner'

Those who are obese, and have other health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, lose their memory and thinking skills almost a quarter faster, found researchers at University College London.

Their study was based on almost 6,500 Whitehall civil servants, whose health was monitored between the ages of 50 and 60.

They were weighed and measured, their blood pressure and cholesterol levels were taken, and they were also asked what medication they were taking.

In addition, they were asked to perform mental tests three times during the decade, which were used to assess memory and other cognitive skills.

Of the 6,401 civil servants in the study, nine per cent (582) were obese. Of those, 350 were also classed as "metabolically abnormal" - meaning they had two additional risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, were taking medication for either condition, or were diabetic.

The researchers found the obese tended to lose their mental powers faster than their thinner colleagues, while those who also had additional conditions lost their memory and thinking skills fastest of all.

The latter group experienced a 22.5 percent faster decline on their cognitive test scores over the decade than those who were healthy.

Archana Singh-Manoux, of the Paris research institute Inserm, who contributed to the study, said their results indicated the idea that people could be obese but still healthy was flawed.

Shirley Cramer, chief executive of Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "We do not yet know why obesity and metabolic abnormality are linked to poorer brain performance, but with obesity levels on the rise, it will be important to delve a little deeper into this association.

"While the study itself focuses on cognitive decline, previous research suggests that a healthy diet, regular exercise, not smoking and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol in midlife can also help stave off dementia.

"With dementia figures spiralling towards a million, the findings suggest we should be conscious of our general health throughout life."

Stress Related Back Pain is a Relatively Modern Diagnosis

Stress-related back pain is a relatively modern diagnosis although the concept of muscular pain caused by tension is not a new one. Stress of both the physical and psychological sort can make the painful symptoms of any injury worse but 'stress-related back pain' is a term used for pain caused by stress above all other factors.

For many the idea of thoughts and feelings causing a physical problem seems unlikely, but this is well established in medicine. Stress causes many changes in the body and predisposes to conditions such as gastritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. In addition, it causes a build up of tension throughout the body.

Stress-related back pain is thought to relate to this tension. You may have read that back pain can be caused by muscle spasm in the back. This spasm is worsened by tension in the muscles and is a target for interventions such as stretches to the back and physiotherapy.

Stress could trigger pain in the back by creating tension and spasm in the back muscles but then can also be a part of a vicious cycle of worsening back pain. Individuals suffering from daily stress are more likely to avoid gentle exercise and relaxation. As the back pain manifests itself, some people will choose to withdraw from exercise altogether or work longer and harder as the pain limits productivity.

The key to beating back pain is identifying the vicious cycle and taking action to break it. Key to this is reducing stress levels but also increasing light activity, stretching and other exercises. For many people, stress starts at work. When trying to make a change at work thinking beyond just the workload and the obvious psychological stress, ensure you also consider the physical stress your job. If you work at a desk - ensure you're on a good ergonomic chair, perhaps you need a footrest, perhaps your computer screen is too high or too small?

Almost all pain is made worse by stress and back pain in particular can respond to a concerted effort to beat this vicious cycle. Make lots of small changes to your work and lifestyle and you'll be on your way to beating back pain.

“energy” drinks skyrockets ER Visits for Energy-Drink Ills Soar in U.S.

As the popularity of non-alcoholic "energy" drinks skyrockets, so do related health problems, a new study finds.

In 2009, U.S. emergency rooms treated almost 10 times more cases of reactions to beverages such as Monster and Rockstar than they did in 2005, according to a new U.S. government report released Tuesday.

More than 13,000 ER visits related to the highly caffeinated drinks were reported in 2009, said researchers from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Nearly half the emergencies occurred after the beverages were mixed with alcohol or other drugs, and young adults aged 18 to 25 accounted for more than half of those cases, the researchers found.

"A lot of attention has been paid to energy drinks that have alcohol in them and everybody understands that the effect of that can be pretty serious, but energy drinks by themselves can have adverse effects," said lead author Albert Woodward, project director of SAMHSA's Drug Abuse Warning Network.

Sales of these flavored drinks soared 240 percent from 2004 to 2009, Woodward said. Popular brands include Red Bull, Full Throttle (produced by Coca-Cola) and AMP, in addition to Monster and Rockstar.

The drinks contain stimulants such as caffeine, and the amount of caffeine in a can or bottle varies by brand. Whereas a five-ounce cup of coffee contains about 100 milligrams (mg) of caffeine and a 12-ounce cola about 50 mg, some energy drinks contain about 80 mg, others as much as 500 mg, according to the report.

"That's a huge dose of caffeine," said Dr. Jeffrey N. Bernstein, medical director of the Florida Poison Information Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

High doses of caffeine can cause abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, dehydration and other serious conditions.

"Many of the patients who come in have anxiety and their heart is pounding and they are just feeling sick," Bernstein said.

The drinks, sold in cans and bottles in grocery stores, vending machines, bars and other places, are marketed to young people. Up to 50 percent of children, teens and young adults use them, the researchers said in the report.

For the study, the investigators reviewed data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network, which monitors drug-related hospital emergency department visits reported throughout the United States. In 2005, more than 1,100 people sought emergency treatment for adverse reactions to energy drinks. By 2009, ERs treated over 13,000 energy drink patients. More than 16,000 such visits occurred in 2008, the most ever, the researchers found.

Alcohol, pharmaceuticals or illicit drugs were associated with 44 percent of the emergencies, and 52 percent of those visits involved patients 18 to 25 years old.

Overall, young adults between 18 and 39 years old made up more than three-quarters of all the ER visits, and 64 percent were men, the data showed.

Men were twice as likely as women to use alcohol and drugs along with an energy drink. But, more women than men combined energy drinks with pharmaceuticals, the researchers reported.

People who combine these energy drinks with substances of abuse have a raised risk of serious and potentially life-threatening injury, the study authors noted in a SAMHSA news release. In addition, there is a greater likelihood that they will engage in risky behaviors, including driving under the influence.

A group representing beverage makers took issue with the report, however.

"This paper is a troubling example of statistics taken out of context," said a statement released Tuesday by the American Beverage Association (ABA). "Of the more than 123 million visits made to emergency room facilities each year, less than one-hundredth of one percent involved people who consumed energy drinks according to this report."

The ABA goes on to note that, "energy drinks and their ingredients are safe and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration," adding that the report "does not show that energy drinks cause misuse of alcohol."

Nevertheless, some people are especially susceptible to caffeine, Bernstein believes. "If you are susceptible to high blood pressure, it can also be a risk," he said. "If you overdo it, a night in the ER is no day at the beach," he noted.
