Uncompromised Benefits of Stem Cells

The stem cell saga seems to be popularized at this point in time - with testimonials from prominent people admitting on TV and online news portals that they've gone through the process for various reasons and quite satisfied with the results. Stem cells are actually from the body's master cells that are extracted and processed for their curing capabilities that are found to be effective even in treating several chronic diseases. These cells can be found in some adult cells particularly from embryos and amniotic fluid. Adult stem cells are more flexible to be processed to create similar type of embryonic cells.

Body tissues have rare substance cells but they normally generate new essential cells. The newly formed cells split into stem cells called self-renewed cells and specialized cells. Specialized cells are compatible with the cells in the brain, heart, blood and bone. They are capable of repairing damaged tissues and impaired body organs when infused. The following are tested procedures as publicized but some still need thorough research:

More than Just Weight Loss

CNN Health reported on September 04, 2009 that fats drawn from a person's belly by liposuction can be converted into pluripotent stem cells or iPS cells. These will be administered back into the body intravenously to cure the patient's diseases. Aside from making the body lean, injuries and internal damages will be repaired - making the patient more fit without technically going under the knife. The procedure may involve some intimidating needles but generally, the treatment is easy and bearable. It may take a week or two for the stem cells to be processed but other than that, the body's improvement can be felt almost immediately.

Cosmetic Advancement

Scientists discovered that stem cells from the patient's blood can repair the skin's elasticity to get rid of wrinkles. They will be injected underneath the patient's skin to bring back its natural stretch. The study has been concluded only very recently according to Dr. Rafael Sierra, one of the researchers of Mayo Clinic as reported by Startribune Health last August 13, 2012.

Organ Transplant Replacement

Stem cell is also referred to as regenerative medicine based on the continuing studies of Dr. Rafael Sierra's team. These essential cells are cultivated by researchers to replace one particular kind of damaged cells. These specialized cells can be used to cure heart, bone marrow, blood diseases and many other illnesses including Cancer in any part of the body. Series of stem cell injections will be administered to the patients. They must be infused directly to the damaged organ if that's where the problem is. If the patient has a heart disease, the formulated stem cells will be injected into the heart muscle to repair and renew the dysfunctional tissues of the heart. This treatment is quite similar to the principles of organ transplanting - but the good thing is, there is no need for organ replacement.

Total Cure for IBD

Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD is the swelling of the intestine that leads to ulcer. This disease has no cure yet until the emergence of stem cells. Pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medicines are mostly prescribed to temporarily ease the discomforts caused by IBD. Cord blood stem cells improve the deficiency in the intestine's blood vessels that causes the disease.

Stem cells are certainly the hope for severe ailments and no doubt an exciting breakthrough for ageless wellness if you have the money. Perhaps, as the medical findings progress, this will become more affordable for everyone. It is therefore important to spread the message that cord blood donations are very much welcome in most hospitals. This can be extracted from the placentas of newly-born babies. BMI in Men and Women - How Much Should You Weigh?

If you are concerned about your current weight you probably ask yourself - How much should I weigh? Can anyone really answer this question? Well, there are many factors involved here like gender, body shape and most of all, your lifestyle. In order to figure out what would be your ideal weight, we advise you to take a look at your height and weight ratio.

One of the most popular ways to determine your ideal weight is through the BMI factor which requires both your height in pounds and weight in inches. If you live in countries where these particular units are not used, you can find an online converter easily. Additionally, you can also calculate these on your own by simply following these figures:
  • 1kg equals 2.2 lbs
  • 1m equals 39.37 inches
So let's continue finding an answer to the question asked above. As you may already guess, the answer is quite simple, but there are some factors that make the number different from one person to another. The BMI mentioned above can be used to get a general idea about your ideal weight.

Everything is much clearer if there are examples. So, let's see two of them. In the first example, we have a woman 5'1" tall and her current weight is 122 lbs. According to her BMI, if she weights 142 lbs, she can be classified as overweight. However, if she loses some weight and for example reaches 105 lbs, she will be classified as underweight.

In our second example, we have a man of the same height as the woman. According to its BMI his preferred weight would be 134 lbs. To be classified as overweight, he has to weigh 145 lbs and 123 lbs to be considered as underweight.

As you can see although the man and woman have the same height, their weight is different. There are many factors for this and one of the factors which adds more pounds to the man is the muscle mass. It has been proven that men have less body fat than women and more muscles.

This is the reason why there are BMI calculators for men and women separately. However, the BMI shouldn't be considered as a precise method to determine your ideal weight, but rather a guideline to see whether you are in the ideal range. In order to determine your ideal weight it is highly recommended to ask for an expert's advice.

Obese 'lose memory sooner'

Those who are obese, and have other health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, lose their memory and thinking skills almost a quarter faster, found researchers at University College London.

Their study was based on almost 6,500 Whitehall civil servants, whose health was monitored between the ages of 50 and 60.

They were weighed and measured, their blood pressure and cholesterol levels were taken, and they were also asked what medication they were taking.

In addition, they were asked to perform mental tests three times during the decade, which were used to assess memory and other cognitive skills.

Of the 6,401 civil servants in the study, nine per cent (582) were obese. Of those, 350 were also classed as "metabolically abnormal" - meaning they had two additional risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, were taking medication for either condition, or were diabetic.

The researchers found the obese tended to lose their mental powers faster than their thinner colleagues, while those who also had additional conditions lost their memory and thinking skills fastest of all.

The latter group experienced a 22.5 percent faster decline on their cognitive test scores over the decade than those who were healthy.

Archana Singh-Manoux, of the Paris research institute Inserm, who contributed to the study, said their results indicated the idea that people could be obese but still healthy was flawed.

Shirley Cramer, chief executive of Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "We do not yet know why obesity and metabolic abnormality are linked to poorer brain performance, but with obesity levels on the rise, it will be important to delve a little deeper into this association.

"While the study itself focuses on cognitive decline, previous research suggests that a healthy diet, regular exercise, not smoking and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol in midlife can also help stave off dementia.

"With dementia figures spiralling towards a million, the findings suggest we should be conscious of our general health throughout life."

Overweight Women Experience Obesity

Overweight women face a multitude of hardships - such as discrimination in the workplace - that arise from the stigma surrounding obesity. While weight loss may seem like the solution for women hoping to escape anti-fat prejudice, it may not be that simple after all.

New research out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, The University of Manchester and Monash University, has revealed that anti-fat prejudice still persisted against former obese women, even after they had lost a significant amount of weight.

Previous research has shown that the harmful nature of obesity stigma crossed many domains, Dr. Janet Latner, the study's lead author at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, told FoxNews.com. So we designed an experiment to look at whether obesity sting persisted once the weight had been dropped.

Published in the journal Obesity, the study asked young men and women participants to read various stories about a woman who had lost about 70 pounds, or a woman who was currently obese or thin who had remained stable. The participants were then asked to rate the women's attractiveness and then give their opinions on fat people in general.

Negative attitudes toward the obese targets also seemed to increase when the participants were falsely told that the person's weight was easily controllable.

Though the researchers cannot explain exactly why the findings were the way they were, Latner and her colleagues theorized that people are perhaps more judgmental towards the obese, because they believe that it is something the person can easily manage.

Because of their staggering findings, Latner and her team agree that government intervention is necessary to reduce the prejudice against the overweight and obese.

According to Latner, while obesity is important to combat in today's society, obesity stigma is just as important to address, because its persistence could deter overweight women from shedding the pounds.
