What you need: 1 cup white vinegar 1/2 cup of baking soda warm water Directions: Place the towels in the washer and fill with hot water! You may want to raise your water heater temporarily for this, or usually just boil some water on the stove and add to the load. Add a cup of vinegar to the load and performance of a full wash cycle.
Leave the towels in the washer and refilled with hot water again, this time adding 1/2 cup of baking soda. Run through another cycle. Now let completely dry towels. The "science" behind this method: The vinegar (containing acetic acid) dissolves mineral deposits and dissolves buildup and baking soda (which is alkaline) neutralizes odors and dissolves dirt and grease. This combination should take care of the problem 9 times out of 10. If you're still experiencing odors in them, try to repeat the same process above until it is gone. Not recommending this method every time you wash the towels, only when you start to notice that they have a bad smell even washing. Tips for keeping fresh clean towels and odor:
- Be sure to check that the towels are 100 percent dry before storing. Even a small amount of moisture can make towels develop a sour smell. - Mildew loves when left wet towels. They should be hung to air dry after each use. The carpets also should be hung to dry. - Make sure you're not using too much detergent. Too much detergent leaves a residue, especially with high-efficiency washers that use less water. - Do not use commercial fabric softener on towels. Covers towels with a thin layer of chemicals millipore millex which makes them less absorbent. White vinegar is a great natural fabric softener. Also prevents the accumulation, eliminates static, and makes it softer towels. - Make sure the towels dry quickly enough after use. No need to be washed every time you use them, with just hanging to dry completely in a well ventilated, enough for reuse. Source: onegoodthingbyjillee.com Spanish translation: Lucid Life team.
