From 1875 until tonight, there were 275 no-hitters pitched in Major League Baseball.
From 1962 until tonight, the New York Mets played 8,019 regular season games without a no-hitter. (They often came tantalizingly close, with 36 one-hitters.)
Johan Santana, who won two Cy Young Awards for the Minnesota Twins, was traded to the Mets in 2008. He was the superstar pitcher who came to rescue the team after their historic collapse the season before. Not even Santana has been able to save the Mets. But tonight he did something no other Met pitcher has ever done.
Johan Santana has pitched the 276th no hitter in baseball history, and the first for the New York Mets. He beat the Cardinals 8-0, striking out 8 and walking 5. He threw 134 pitches. No hits.
