Google Introduces Chrome-based Touch Screen Laptop

Google's Chrome OS is still a small player in the PC market, unlike Android's dominance of mobile. However, the search giant is making moves to improve its position. This month it has revealed the first touch screen Chromebook, but is it any good?

More and more modern laptops are taking advantage of touchscreen technology in order to help this traditional portable PC form factor take the fight to the booming tablet market.

Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system (OS) is explicitly designed to work well in a touch-based technological environment, although even this latest offering from one of the world's largest companies is having a tough time holding onto the market share established by its forebears.

Google has the smartphone and tablet industries wrapped up with the finger-friendly Android, but it remains a very minor player when it comes to the laptop market.

Here its Chrome OS is facing an uphill struggle to convince consumers that it is worth picking over Windows or Apple's OS X, largely because it is based almost entirely in web connectivity and the cloud, which renders it almost useless if you happen to lack broadband at home.

Google is hoping to convince people that Chrome OS is still a viable alternative with the introduction of a new Chromebook device that is already being compared with Apple's MacBook Air.

The new laptop is known as the Pixel, which is a reference to the fact that its touchscreen display has allegedly been endowed with the highest pixel density of any portable PC currently on the market.

Google's Linus Upson helped to reveal the Pixel and said that it has a ppi rating of 239. That is not quite as impressive as the iPhone 5's 326ppi, but of course users will not be holding the Pixel quite so close to their faces.

The screen is also of course touch sensitive, which is why Upson went all out in promoting the tactile intuitiveness of the Chrome OS when interacted with via fingers rather than a keyboard and mouse.

Users can swipe between open applications, change tabs on the browser and generally engage with most aspects of the OS without having to use anything else other than their digits.

The screen measures 12.85 inches across the diagonal and has a native resolution of 2560x1700, whilst its Gorilla Glass surface gives its a premium glossy finish and should also make it durable, which is important for something that is going to constantly come into contact with a user's hands.

The Pixel is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and uses solid state storage to keep everything running quickly, as well as minimising boot times.

Connectivity is also impressive, with both Wi-Fi and 4G LTE antennas housed within its slender chassis.

Laptops with touch screens still have a long way to go if they are going to fight back against tablet rivals, so this Chromebook still has a lot to prove.

Apple iPhone 5S with four projectors and virtual Mac OS X

Rumors about some devices called iPhone 6 and iPad 5 has already started to appear on the web, but before the full smartphone sixth generation Apple will release something like the iPhone 5S . New iPhone App YouTube Releases

The retro, rounded TV icon was one of the first to grace the iPhone's screen when the device was released in 2007. Now, for the first time, new iPhones will no longer include the YouTube app by default. But YouTube has already whipped up a replacement.

On Tuesday, YouTube released its own app for the iPhone. The release comes just one month after Apple publicly confirmed it would no longer include the popular video-site's app on the upcoming version of its mobile operating system, iOS 6.

Being a pre-installed, native app on iPhones and iPads has given YouTube instant access to a fast-growing segment of users -- YouTube gets 1 billion mobile views each day across all platforms, and mobile now makes up 25% of all YouTube views.

But the deal with Apple has not been without its drawbacks. Because the app was built by Apple and baked into the iOS mobile operating system, YouTube had limited control over what it could change and control in the app. Perhaps most importantly, it couldn't show videos with ads because Apple didn't allow it.

This new app gives control back to YouTube, but at a cost. To avoid hemorrhaging iPhone users who upgrade to iOS 6, or who buy a new phone with the new operating system pre-installed, the company must convince iPhone owners to stick with YouTube either by downloading the new app or visiting the mobile version of YouTube.com.

Here's what you'll find on the new YouTube app for iPhone and iPod touch:

• Tens of thousands more videos;
• A new YouTube channel guide which you can swipe from the left edge of the screen;
• New search tools that give suggestions while you type, and let you sort through videos or channels;

French blog Nowhereelse.fr has another round of pictures of the next iteration of the iPhone, generally dubbed the iPhone 5.

While yesterday's batch of pictures showed the front face of the next iPhone stacked up against an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, today's set features a fully assembled iPhone 5 next to the existing versions.

The phone is placed next to what is labeled as iPhone 4, as well as an iPhone 3GS, which the site mistakenly refers to as an iPhone 3.

The pictures fall in line with the wave of rumors that have popped up for the next iPhone, which includes a longer body and larger display. The next iPhone is widely expected to also be able to tap into faster 4G LTE networks. Apple is expected to unveil the next iPhone at an event in San Francisco on September 12, though that is completely unofficial at this point.

There's an intense buildup of anticipation for the new smartphone because it marks the first time in more than two years that the iPhone will get a new design, with the iPhone 4S getting only software and internal updates.

Samsung unveils Galaxy S III Challenge iPhone

Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest hand-held weapon in its war against Apple a smartphone dubbed Galaxy S III that is lighter and thinner than the iPhone despite having a screen nearly twice as large.

The S III, with voice command, will go on sale in Europe at the end of this month and in the United States and other countries this summer. The company did not offer pricing information or disclose which U.S. carriers would offer the phone, which will run on 4G wireless networks.

Samsung is hoping the new phone will help it leapfrog Apple. During the first quarter of this year, Apple accounted for 29 percent of U.S. smartphones sold, while Samsung was close behind at 24 percent, according to figures released this week by NPD Group, a market research firm. Some analysts believe that Samsung sold more devices than Apple around the world from January to March.

Smartphone observers have attributed Samsung's success to the growing prepaid-phone market, in which consumers can buy lower-cost handsets without a contract, paying for a limited period of service in advance. Samsung accounted for 4 in 10 prepaid smartphones sold in the U.S. during the first quarter.

For its new phone, Samsung took a page from Apple's voice-controlled phone helper, Siri, saying the S III "has the enhanced intelligence to make everyday life easier," including a front-facing camera that will signal the phone to keep its screen bright if it detects that the user is reading or browsing the Internet.

The "S-Voice" feature, like Siri, allows users to dictate emails and text messages, issue voice commands to play songs, and even tell the alarm to "snooze."

The features will be powered by a souped-up internal computer with four internal processors, called a quad core; most other smartphones including the iPhone still have only two cores. The phone will have an 8-megapixel camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, and will run the latest version of Google's Android mobile operating system, known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Steve Jobs on medical leave - transplantation specialist discusses two likely clinical scenarios

William Chapman, transplantation chief at Washington University in St. Louis, hasn't examined Mr. Jobs personally, but said there are two likely scenarios in the CEO's case.

The first is that there was a transplant-related problem, though it would be unusual for that to happen a year and a half after the transplant.

A more likely possibility would be that the neuroendocrine tumor metastasized again. "It's really difficult to cure the disease with a liver transplant," said Mr. Chapman, adding that it's common to have some degree of recurrence. "Most people hope they reset the clock, gained some time and gained a quality of life even if you don't cure the disease."

Mr. Jobs was diagnosed in 2004 with a rare type of pancreatic cancer called islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, which could be cured if surgery removed it promptly. He reportedly had surgery by the end of 2004 but began exhibiting weight loss in 2008. This type of cancer often metastasizes in another organ, usually the liver, during a patient's lifetime. A Tennessee hospital disclosed that Mr. Jobs had received a liver transplant there in 2009.

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose," Mr. Jobs said in the commence speech in June 2005, almost a year after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Smartphones and portable devices for medical education

I use an iPhone Touch to listen to lectures and watch presentations (PDF and video). Amazon Kindle works for the same purpose (PDF only, no video).

However, the external speaker of the iPhone Touch leaves much to be desired in terms of sound quality and volume, and recently, I started downloading the lectures directly to my cell phone (HTC Touch Pro2). The HTC Touch Pro interface is not as polished as the one on the iPod Touch but the device itself is not tied to iTunes and I can easily download audio files from the mobile sites of Google Reader, Bloglines and Google Docs.
