BabbaCo: Escape The Indoor Blues With Awesome Adventures

Before I tell you all about the wonders of BabbaCo and their BabbaBox I wanted to make a little confession: I am NOT a crafty Momma (Not YET. I'm a work in progress).  I find so many projects on Pinterest but I don't pin them because I KNOW that I do not have the time or energy to pull these "easy" crafts together.  I work full time and race home each day to be with my little one.  I can't imagine rushing all over town to purchase goodies from the craft store!  Thanks to BabbaBoxes - I don't HAVE to.  EVERYTHING that I need is included.  Right down to scissors, glue, and markers!

Small steps can prevent Kentucky's No. 1 killer, heart disease

It is now February, which is American Heart Month and a perfect time to remind people that small steps can reduce their risk of heart disease, Kentucky's No. 1 killer.

You may be surprised to hear that almost 80 percent of heart disease is preventable and there are daily things that can be done to keep hearts healthy, according Dr. Martha Grogan, medical editor-in-chief of Mayo Clinic Healthy Heart for Life.

For example, try to move 10 extra minutes each day, Recent research shows a sedentary lifestyle may increase your risk of heart attack almost as much as smoking, said Grogan.

Each day, make an effort to get up from your desk to go talk to a colleague instead of sending an email, or walk around the house as you are talking on the phone, she recommends: “Moving even 10 minutes a day for someone who’s been sedentary may reduce the risk for heart disease by 50 percent.”

Hearts are also hurt when you deprive yourself of sleep, which is a necessity like food and water, said Virend Somers, a Mayo cardiologist and sleep expert. Chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and depression.

Healthy habits can reduce a majority of risks for heart attack. "A 53-year-old male smoker with high blood pressure has a 20 percent chance of having a heart attack over the next 10 years. If he stops smoking, his risk drops to 10 percent; if he takes high blood pressure medicine, it falls to 5 percent," says preventive cardiologist Randal Thomas, M.D.

Improving Kentucky's mental health calls for the action of schools and doctors to identify children's mental health needs early

Many people may think that addressing mental health needs in Kentucky relies mostly on more funding, but its effectiveness hinges more on the ability to identify children who need help and make sure they get it early, two experts said on cn|2's "Pure Politics" Tuesday.

About half of mental illnesses begin to appear before a person turns 14, reports cn|2's Ryan Alessi. Mental-health experts say it’s often more effective and efficient to treat children, and it’s easier for parents to make sure their children get help than it is for someone to convince or coerce an adult exhibiting symptoms that he needs treatment, said Dr. Allen Brenzel, a child psychiatrist.


Encouraging school officials and doctors to identify children with these needs can be a challenge, Brenzel said, because it is difficult for a teacher to have tough conversations with parents about this topic. Also, while doctors may be most important in this process, obstacles exist because our current "system of care doesn't promote the amount of time and effort and importance on these issues," he said.

When a primary-care doctor's offices are jammed with sick patients and a parent comes in to discuss problems their child is having in school, "That’s a challenging environment in primary care,” Brenzel said. “But people trust their primary care providers very often, and that is where they go. So some of what we need to look at is co-location of services.”

Brenzel said we need a system with a single point of access, where a family can be greeted, there is a period of engagement and a reimbursement structure that supports the time and efforts required by behavioral health.

"We need to integrate behavioral health into the overall health care system," he said. "We have a very fragmented and inefficient system that leads to confusion when a family identifies that their child needs help and this isn't going to be fixed by a medical model.  We now know that the kinds of services need to be much more comprehensive and supportive. A system that allows a comprehensive mental and behavioral health assessment of needs will allow us to triage many kids out of the juvenile justice system."

Benzel said this is a societal issue and for every $1 that we spend in supportive services, we can avoid spend $5 later on adult incarcerations and adult prison. On average, it was more than $2,000 cheaper per person to treat a child than an adult. It amounted to $4,328 per child compared to more than $6,500 for each adult treated, Alessi reports.

Families may be fearful of the cost of mental-health services, but there are resources for people without mental-health insurance coverage at the 14 mental health centers in Kentucky, said Steve Shannon, executive director of the Kentucky Association of Mental Health/Mental Retardation Programs.

In terms of resources, Kentucky spent nearly a half billion dollars on mental health for people under 21 in the 2010-11 fiscal year. For adults, the state spent more than $730 million, according to figures from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. (Read more)

Common beliefs about obesity and weight loss found to be myths

Think going to gym class drives weight loss, or that breastfeeding protects a child from obesity? Think again, because these are among seven popular myths about obesity myths, according to an international team of researchers.

The seven popular but largely inaccurate beliefs, which lead to poor policy decisions, inaccurate public-health recommendations and wasted resources, were identified by the team led by David Allison, associate dean for science in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Here are the seven myths:

Myth 1: Small, sustained changes in how many calories we take in or burn will accumulate to produce large weight changes over the long term.
Fact: Small changes in calorie intake or expenditure do not accumulate indefinitely. Changes in body mass eventually cancel out the change in calorie intake or burning.

Myth 2: Setting realistic goals in obesity treatment is important. Otherwise, patients become frustrated and lose less weight.
Fact: Some data suggest that people do better with more ambitious goals.

Myth 3: Gradually losing weight is better than quickly losing pounds. Quick weight losses are more likely to be regained.
Fact: People who lose more weight rapidly are more likely to weigh less, even after several years.

Myth 4: Patients who feel “ready” to lose weight are more likely to make the required lifestyle changes, do health-care professionals need to measure each patient’s diet readiness.
Fact: Among those who seek weight-loss treatment, evidence suggests that assessing readiness neither predicts weight loss nor helps to make it happen.

Myth 5: Physical-education classes, in their current form, play an important role in reducing and preventing childhood obesity.
Fact: Physical education, as typically provided, does not appear to counter obesity.

Myth 6: Breastfeeding protects children against future obesity.
Fact: Breastfeeding has many benefits for mother and child, but the data do not show that it protects against obesity.

Myth 7: One episode of sex can burn up to 300 Kcals per person.
Fact: It may be closer to one-twentieth of that on average, and not much more than sitting on the couch.

The research team also defined six “presumptions" that are generally held to be true even though more studies are needed before conclusions can be drawn, such as the idea that regularly eating versus skipping breakfast contributes to weight loss. Studies show it has no effect.

The same goes for the idea that eating vegetables by itself brings about weight loss, or that snacking packs on the pounds. According to Allison and colleagues, these hypotheses have not been shown to be true, and some data suggest they may be false.

The researchers also identified nine research-proven facts about weight loss. For example, weight-loss programs for overweight children that involve parents and the child’s home achieve better results than programs that take place solely in schools or other settings.

Also, many studies show that while genetic factors play a large role in obesity, “Heritability is not destiny.” Realistic changes to lifestyle and environment can, on average, bring about as much weight loss as treatment with the most effective weight-loss drugs on the market. (Read more)

Just Take It With a Grain of Salt

Showbiz Mother SM and daughter SD went shopping for replica Goyard bags in a popular flea market in the metropolis. The bags were to be given as gifts to their friends. SM and SD were haggling for the best price for the the 10 pieces of knock-off Goyard bags that they were buying from the seller. There were many other shoppers in the store as it was a payday weekend and there was mad rush everywhere. The store's sales staff SS(tinderas) were very busy attending to different customers.

SM on the other hand was busy haggling with one of the SS. After she was given a sizable discount, SM and SD took the initiative to putting the items inside their shopping bags since SS were attending to other buyers as well. When SM and SD finished, they hurriedly paid for the items and left.

Suddenly, SS had a hunch that something went wrong. Immediately she counted and mentally inventoried the remaining bags and lo and behold, 2 pieces were missing! She panicked and hurriedly ran after the mother and daughter who were walking amidst the sea of shoppers. When SS caught up with them, she politely told them of the problem: that the two missing items could have been placed (accidentally?) inside their shopping bags.

SM was furious and embarrassed at the same time as they were attracting people's attention. She told SS that it's impossible that the missing bags were with them as she personally counted everything carefully. But she knew that she wouldn't be able to get away with not opening the shopping bag, so she hesitantly gave in to SS' request to open it -- and true enough, as expected, the 2 bags were there (shopping bag had 12 pcs. instead of 10pcs.)!

It was such a painful situation to be in for the three of them right that very moment as "uzi's" were aplenty and looking malicious. Both SS and SD had a hard time feigning everything was okay amidst such major embarrassment. Meanwhile SS apologized and left quietly with the 2 bags in hand.

Tip: When thinking naughty, be smart. Avoid stepping on potential land mines.

Swept Away: Navy to scrap $277 million ship to avoid scraping reef

A United States minesweeper ship that crashed into a coral reef due to inaccurate Navy maps will have to be cut into small pieces and removed in order to prevent harming the ocean’s ecosystem, according to the Navy and other reports.

The $277 million USS Guardian, a Naval warship that clears waterways of mines, crashed into a coral reef near the Philippines earlier this month.

The Navy will disassemble it piece by piece in order to avoid damaging the reef rather than tow the multi-million dollar ship off of the reef and perform necessary repairs.

“Our only supportable option is to dismantle the damaged ship and remove it in sections,” Capt. Darryn James, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, wasquoted as saying Tuesday by the Military Times.

One Navy source criticized decision makers for deliberately destroying the expensive warship just weeks before devastating cuts to the defense budget are scheduled to take place.

“Boneheaded decision making on the way into the reef and boneheaded decision making on the way out,” said the source, who requested anonymity so as not to be seen criticizing the Navy. “It’s amazing how we can find ways to spend more money we don’t have on the eve of sequestration.”

It remains unclear how much the cleanup operation will cost U.S. taxpayers.

It is believed the ship crashed into the reef due to the use of flawed maps.

“The U.S. Navy also revealed Jan. 18 that the digital navigational chart in use by the Guardian misplaced the correct location of the reef by about eight nautical miles,” the Military Times reported.

Navy officials claim the maps have since been updated and corrected.

One senior congressional source warned that these types of accidents could increasingly occur as the Obama administration continues to cut the military.

“Sooner or later people have to come to terms with the reality that Obama is wearing out the Navy through over deployments and cuts to vital training and readiness accounts,” the aide said. “Look no further than this reef in the Philippines to see what a ‘hollow force’ looks like.”

The Navy maintains the crashed ship is beyond saving due to extensive damage. The ship’s hull has been penetrated and its fiberglass ripped off by waves.

Two cranes are currently en route to the crash site and are scheduled to arrive on Feb. 1, according to the Military Times. It will take more than a month for the Navy to demolish the ship and safely remove it from the reef.

American salvage teams are reported to have already cleaned-up any portions of the ship that might have damaged the Tubbataha Reef, which is located in the Sulu Sea and has been nominated as one of the new seven wonders of the world. According to the Military Times, Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the Seventh Fleet, apologized for any possible environmental degradation:

“As a protector of the sea and a sailor myself, I greatly regret any damage this incident has caused to the Tubbataha Reef,” Swift said in a statement. “We know the significance of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and its importance as a world heritage site. Its protection is vital, and we take seriously our obligations to protect and preserve the maritime environment.”

The destruction of the ship is being viewed as a “serious blow” to the force.

“The loss of the Guardian is a serious blow for the stressed U.S. mine force, which has been called on to expand operations in the Persian Gulf,” according to the Military Times. “Including the Guardian, 12 of the fleet’s 14 mine countermeasures ships are currently operating overseas or forward-deployed to the Far East or the Persian Gulf region.”

Spicy Wakame Chili


I'm currently in the midst of a weird living situation and it includes living with two football fanatics. The television is always blaring sports. There are randoms screams and bouts of profanity blaring from the living room at all hours. And I have committed the football schedule to heart so I know exactly when I should be out of the house. Come Super Bowl Sunday you can find me at the spa, thank you very much.

When I made this chili this week it was not with the intention of serving it at a pre-game party, but I think this recipe will nourish you regardless of what you have in store this weekend. And, I'm really excited to share this recipe with you because this chili has a special ingredient.  Can you guess what it is?  I suppose judging from the title you might say wakame, and you would be correct!

If you are not already familiar with wakame, it's definitely time to get this sea vegetable on your radar. Wakame is a seaweed loaded with magnesium, iron, calcium, iodine, folate, and a host of vitamins. I've mentioned before that I can't stand the smell of the ocean or anything that tastes "fishy," but I have become an expert at hiding sea vegetables in foods.

I always add kombu (edible kelp) to my beans while cooking (to help soften them and add trace minerals) and I can't get enough of this gingered sea vegetable salad with arame. I've recently begun to sneak wakame into my vegetable stocks and soups and I promise that with this recipe, you won't even know it's in there!



I usually buy my wakame and sea vegetables from Eden Organic. I trust their brand and have always been impressed with their quality. (You can usually find them in your local health food store as well as online.)

Start by soaking the wakame in water. Look at it grow! I only used two teaspoons of dried wakame in this recipe so that I wouldn't notice it in the broth. However, if you actually like the taste of the ocean, feel free to add more!


Once you soak the wakame for about five minutes, simply drain the soaking water and then blend it with the vegetable broth. I have found that blending it helps to disperse the seaweed so you can be sure you won't find any chunks in your soup. You can use this technique to add wakame to any recipe that calls for vegetable broth. 

After this, you're off to make your chili. This chili is fabulous on its own, but it's even better when topped with tofu sour cream!

Spicy Wakame Chili
Serves 6

2 teaspoons dried diced wakame
2 cups vegetable broth
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 medium carrots, diced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups cooked black beans
2 cups cooked kidney beans
2 cups cooked pinto beans
2 cups fresh or frozen corn kernels
1 tablespoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon chile powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1-28 oz can diced tomatoes with juice
1-14.5 oz can diced and fire-roasted tomatoes
1/4 cup tomato paste
Sea salt and freshly-ground pepper to taste

Begin by soaking the wakame in some water for about 5 minutes, until it expands. Drain the wakame and add to a blender with your vegetable broth. Blend until smooth and set aside.

Add the oil to a pot over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery and saute for about 5 minutes, until onions are translucent. Add the bell pepper and garlic and saute an additional minute, until the garlic is fragrant.

Add the remaining ingredients, along with your vegetable broth, and simmer on low for about 30 minutes. Serve hot, topped with the tofu sour cream.

Tofu Sour Cream

1 (10 1/2 ounce) box silken firm tofu
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons lemon juice
3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt

Crumble tofu and all other ingredients into a food processor and process for several minutes, until smooth. I recommend placing it in the fridge or freezer for about 10 minutes to help firm it up prior to serving.

Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator and it will keep up to 5 days. (Note: it may separate so mix thoroughly before reusing).

That pain medication addiction turned into an addiction to opioids and alcohol, until her family staged an intervention. This happened in 1978, and after struggling through the physical and mental pain of recovery, she stayed sober until her death until 2011.

2. Bob Forrest

Bob Forrest was the lead singer of the band Thelonious Monster, a popular band in the 1990's. Bob was known for his crazy, drug-driven antics both on and off the stage. He had numerous drug-related arrests, serving jail time numerous times. He was in and out of drug rehab. He overdosed several times.
Many people, including Dr. Drew Pinsky, thought that he wouldn't survive his level of heroin use and addiction. But he surprised everyone by eventually finding recovery. Just like Drew Barrymore's, Robert Downey, Jr's story is another well-known story of success, addiction, and redemption. And just like Drew, Robert's addictions began at a very, very young age. Robert's father was also a drug addict. Robert Downey Jr was first given marijuana when he was only 6 years old... by his own father. He has said that his addictions to drugs began when he was just 8 years old.

Poor, rural mothers-to-be have high levels of stress, and few resources to help them handle it, small-scale study concludes

Low-income pregnant women in rural areas experience high levels of stress, but lack the appropriate means to manage their emotional well-being, according to a small-scale study at the University of Missouri. The authors suggest that rural doctors should link these women with resources to help manage stress, Medical Xpress reports.

"Many people think of rural life as being idyllic and peaceful, but in truth, there are a lot of health disparities for residents of rural communities," Mizzou nursing professor Tina Bloom told Medical Xpress. "Chronic, long-term stress is hard on pregnant women's health and on their babies' health. Stress is associated with increased risks for adverse health outcomes, such as low birth weights or pre-terms deliveries, and those outcomes can kill babies."

Researchers studied about 25 rural pregnant women. Through interviews, researchers discovered that financial problems were one of the biggest stressers for them. Financial stress was exacerbated by the women's lack of employment, reliable transportation and affordable housing. The women also said that small-town gossip, isolation and interdependence of their lives with extended family members also increased stress. Almost two out of three women showed symptoms of depression, and one in four displayed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. (Read more)

After a painful and much-publicized break-up, young star YS is quietly keeping to herself, avoiding as much as she could talks that will lead to a past she would rather bury. On the love department, her male admirers are distant, careful to proclaim their sentiments. As it is, YS is allegedly not keen on anything yet. For one so young, she is so circumspect, weighing out risks -- calculating before plunging on to something new.

Heard that talented actor TA is bent on pursuing her, but is having doubts if he stands a chance. Although both YS and TA seem to welcome the idea, it is YS who is said to be holding back -- is she skeptical, confused, or just plain scared by the trauma of her past?

But TA is serious enough, as relayed to some close friends -- but there are humps he has to pave first, like someone in YS'  past whom he is friends with. But friends say YS and TA complement each other in looks and personality. By showbiz standards, both lead considerably quiet, unassuming lives, so not prone to scandals. I am a fan of your site and I know that you have a huge and solid readership. I have a story that I want to share with your readers and I really hope you can publish this so that more people will be aware.

This is about an aspiring fashion designer named AS and his sister SA. Both are selling LV bags to many people claiming that they are genuine. Everyone seems to trust both siblings, and saying that their aunt, AR works in LV Milan seems to have strengthened their claim on the authenticity of their merchandise.

I have purchased quite a number of bags from them. But it was only recently that I did some research and inspection, and what I found out really shocked me. I can't believe that for the longest time, I had been buying fake LV's all along! I did further investigation and found out that their aunt, AR actually lives in a province, located southeast of Metro Manila. She had never worked for LV. She just lives here in the Philippines, had never left and worked in Milan at all.

I went to LV store in Greenbelt and checked the bags side by side with the authentic ones and the big discrepancies really screamed fake! The stitches, the cuts, the pattern, and a lot more. I really felt so bad for myself and all the people they have sold these items to as not being able to look beyond the obvious. My concern is that this designer, AS and his sister SA, have been selling these fake stuff for a long time already and has sold to so many people. You do the math and you will come to quite a staggering figure. It’s really all illegal business from day one.

I hope this brother and sister tandem will soon be found out, and this conspiracy to be made public and justice will be done. It is such a big scam, FP. It reminds me of the Birkin scandal that you have written about just last year.

Feds plan to let states impose co-payments on Medicaid patients above poverty level to encourage them to expand the program

If Kentucky expands its Medicaid program, it will probably be able to reduce the cost by requiring patients whose incomes are above the federal poverty level to help pay for their care. That could make it more feasible for the state to expand the program to people with incomes up to 138 percent of the poverty line.

A proposed federal policy will let states charge co-payments and increased premiums for doctor visits and some prescription drugs and hospital care. Robert Pear of The New York Times reports that the policy is designed to encourage states to expand Medicaid under the federal health-care reform law, with generous federal help. By shifting costs to patients, the state and federal governments would pay less.

That adds a new perspective to the cost consideration in Kentucky's debate over expansion of Medicaid. It could influence the state's decision, Republican state Sen. Julie Denton of Louisville said Friday during a legislative panel at the Kentucky Press Association convention.

Denton cautioned that the state needs to fix its problems with Medicaid managed care before it expands the program. Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear has said he wants to expand Medicaid if the state can afford it, and since there is no deadline for deciding whether to participate in the expansion, the debate may carry over into 2014.

Some Republicans have said Kentucky can't afford the expansion. If the state expands Medicaid eligibility to 138 percent of poverty from its current threshold of 70 percent, the federal government would pay all the cost of the expansion until 2017, when the state would begin helping out, with its share reaching 10 percent in 2020. The federal share of the state's current program is 72 percent.

This proposed rule could have important implications not just for state finances, but for Medicaid patients. It means that a family of three with an annual income of $30,000 could be required to pay $1,500 in premiums and co-payments, Pear reports in the Times.

As published in the Federal Register last week, the rule proposes to "update and simplify Medicaid premium and cost sharing requirements, to promote the most effective use of services and to assist states in identifying cost-sharing flexibilities." It proposes "new options for states to establish higher cost sharing for nonpreferred drugs and to propose higher cost sharing for non-emergency use" of emergency rooms.

Barbara K. Tomar, director of federal affairs at the American College of Emergency Physicians, told Pear that the administration had not adequately defined the “nonemergency services” for which the poor might have to pay. "In many cases, she said, patients legitimately believe they need emergency care, but the final diagnosis does not bear that out," Pear writes.

The proposed rule has no limit on emergency department charges for "non-emergency use." It says the hospital will have responsibility to assess the individual clinically and ensure access to other sources of care before requiring payment, which could pose problems for hospitals.

The public has until Feb. 13 to comment on the proposed rule, which can be submitted at www.regulations.gov.
