The essence of being a woman -- a phrase that in all likelihood often brings motherhood to mind. Yes, inspite of the frenzy and madness of the world we live in, no matter the consequences and situations, we will never be wanting of women who dream to be able to nurture and give life in their lifetime. To many, it is the culmination of being a woman. Motherhood is a gift like no other.

Controversial Personality is gearing up for a major medical procedure soon. According to sources, CP is seriously preparing herself up for this "big personal project" that will yet be the biggest milestone in her life should it become successful. She had been happily married for years, but feels that having a child of her own will be the sweetest icing on her cake.

Years ago, CP had been vocal about her desire to have a child. This she proclaimed before she even got married. Unfortunately, the years past her by without realizing it. Although she once tried going under a procedure before, but after the anxious waiting, nothing came out of it -- she was devastated. But she hasn't given up, in fact she's getting really more serious now as she is already advancing in age.

Her privileged and understanding husband seems open and supportive of his wife's wishes. After all, they know their limitations, and while they still can and have the resources for it,it's all systems go.

This development will surely create a loud stir among CP's haters, and there are a lot of them. CP has been an enduring fixture in her industry, fearless and daring in all her advocacies. Will she be as fearless and daring on this one?

When you think of Hollywood, there are many things that instantly come to mind. And I bet that drugs and alcohol are one of the first things that you think of. Our magazines and entertainment news shows are always headlined by stories of celebrities who have gotten yet another DUI, or landed themselves in mandatory rehab programs. When we think of celebrities, sure we think of the glitz and glamour that come along with their lifestyles. But we also think about the downsides that drug and alcohol abuse has brought into many of their lives.

But when we look to celebrities and addictive substances, all of the stories aren't as distressing as Lindsay Lohan's, or as tragic as Amy Winehouse's. In fact, there are many celebrities who have shown us great examples of overcoming addictions to drugs and alcohol. There are dozens of celebrities who have battled addictions... but have found their roads to recovery.

Let's talk about just a few of those examples. Here are 4 celebrity examples of successful addiction recovery:

 1. Betty Ford

Years clean/sober: 33
You might be surprised to see a former First Lady of the United States on this list. But yes, Betty Ford, the wife of President Gerald Ford, struggled with alcoholism and opioid addiction. Her addiction began as an addiction to pain medicines she was taking to treat a pinched nerve. That pain medication addiction turned into an addiction to opioids and alcohol, until her family staged an intervention. This happened in 1978, and after struggling through the physical and mental pain of recovery, she stayed sober until her death until 2011.
Betty founded the Betty Ford Center for substance abuse and addiction in 1982.

2. Bob Forrest

Years clean/sober: 17
Bob Forrest was the lead singer of the band Thelonious Monster, a popular band in the 1990's. Bob was known for his crazy, drug-driven antics both on and off the stage. He had numerous drug-related arrests, serving jail time numerous times. He was in and out of drug rehab. He overdosed several times.
Many people, including Dr. Drew Pinsky, thought that he wouldn't survive his level of heroin use and addiction. But he surprised everyone by eventually finding recovery. He said that he finally accepted that it was the drugs that were causing his problems. He went to rehab again, taking it seriously this time. He finally found full recovery, and has since helped many other celebrities find recovery also.
Since his recovery in 1996, Bob has become a drug counselor, he was the Chemical Dependency Program Director as Las Encinas Hospital, and he is the cofounder of Hollywood Recovery Services.

3. Drew Barrymore

Years clean/sober: 20+
I think we all know Drew's story: child star turned drug addict turned successful (sober) Hollywood A-lister. Drew is known to have one of the youngest drug addictions of all of the celebrity addiction stories. But she also has one of the most successful.
There were years of drug addiction in Drew's family, including her parents and grandfather. Drew began struggling with drug addiction when she was very young. She reportedly started drinking and smoking cigarettes when she was just 9 years old. She began using marijuana at age 10. At age 12, she started with cocaine use. Drew first entered drug rehab when she was just 13 years old, then again when she was 15. After a failed suicide attempt at age 15, she turned her life around, completely staying off of drugs. She has been completely clean ever since, and she has been able to move on to a very successful movie career.

4. Robert Downey, Jr.

Years clean/sober: 12
Just like Drew Barrymore's, Robert Downey, Jr's story is another well-known story of success, addiction, and redemption. And just like Drew, Robert's addictions began at a very, very young age. Robert's father was also a drug addict. Robert Downey Jr was first given marijuana when he was only 6 years old... by his own father. He has said that his addictions to drugs began when he was just 8 years old.
Robert Downey, Jr was one of the most popular actors in the 80's. That was, until his addictions took over. He had numerous drug-related arrests, and went through rehab several times. Directors stopped hiring him for roles.
It was in 2001 that Robert "realized that he couldn't continue this lifestyle of drug abuse." It was then that he joined rehab one more time, and was finally able to drop his addictions for good. He has since regained his movie career, becoming even more successful than he was before, starring in some of the most popular blockbusters of the 2000's, including Tropic Thunder, Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes, and The Avengers.

A Secret Affair, A Secret Deal

Sometime ago, a Popular Singer and actress PS was almost engaged to be married to her non-showbiz Boyfriend BF of many years. But sadly, and to everyone's shock, all those years just ended up in splitsville. No reason was given.

After the split, PS continued with her showbiz career, and BF with his. Not long after, BF who worked somewhere decided to stay in town for good and was reported to be exploring on a new path -- to head a showbiz enterprise. Not a few eyebrows were raised, questioning his fitness to embark on something that's such a far cry from his professional training.

Back to the present. The gossip mill has been on fire for days with a Star's TS damaging expose on her unsettled grievances versus the people she had trusted. Her word against theirs. Public was treated to a buffet of dizzying versions of the scandal. Everyone had seen the surface. But has anyone tried to scratch the bottom? Let us see.

Mrs. Career Woman MC who is close to showbiz powerful is allegedly "involved" with the now married BF who heads the enterprise. BF now does good business with MC who helps him ink transactions through her big connections. But their business dealings have been stepping on not a few toes who bear the brunt of being dislodged from their comfort zones the moment they try to question MC and BF. The scheme allegedly had been grossly disadvantageous to the people involved such that those who could not stand the heat, chose to get out of the kitchen before they get burned. But the rest -- the "no choice" ones, just grin and bear it.

But not the one stubborn antagonist SA whose many interests are in grave conflict with both MC's and BF's. SA who is the principal author of the major chaos within the organization, had allegedly secretly manipulated everything by conveniently using a "dummy" to expose and shame MC and BF -- while she watched. The astute SA who has her own gigantic family issue as well, tried to soften the blow by focusing on the affairs and dealings of MC and BF. How clever!

And TS, the gullible dummy, who is like a basketball dribbled back and forth, is the one most heavily wounded in this spectacle. Will she be able to bounce back after the game? We will watch.

Getting Into His Soul

Media Celebrity MC tries very had to project a positive aura, one that is warm especially to his friends and followers. Apart from that, MC appears to be a decent guy who will not be caught engaged in public scandals. So when stories get around that he is into something not nice, people are not biting it easy.

MC was recently somewhere up in one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. There, MC bumped into some hot athletes HA from a certain university whom he invited for the an intimate party. He wanted these boys to join him, so he thought of using his hot girls friends HG as well, as bait and attraction to these guys so that they would be enticed more to participate.

At the venue, MC was extra chatty with the HA, partying with the booze and sounds to complete it. Throughout the party, MC was extraordinarily friendly with HA who felt obliged, since they find MC to be kind and fun to be with. Apart from that, HA enjoyed the company of the young HG who were just as cool.

While in the heat of the party, everyone was surprised that MC tried to pass around something " prohibited." Of course, the very disciplined athletes as they are, the HA's who come from a reputable university turned it down. But the persistent MC tried to sweet talk them into it, but the boys stood their ground and said no. Some HG had some of the stuff and went really wild that night.

Did MC's action signify something more than what the public already know about him? Is he, of all people also into "it" as well? Career-wise, he seems okay, but is he on the personal front? Are his problems as huge as his persona?

Bordering on Earthly Desires

A few years ago, comedy performer (CP) might have gotten her way with her male co-host (MH) in a successful series that was considered a breakthrough for the network. At that time, CP had an overwhelming crush on MH. CP cannot be blamed for her feelings as MH is the boy-next-door type, fun, and well-mannered. A very competent host, MH handled the shows entrusted to him with aplomb. Although he tried acting, it was never his genre.

Adding to his appeal is the challenge that must have enticed CP. MH has a relationship and was never rumoured to have been disloyal. In one of their out of town tapings, CP kept teasing and flirting with MH. For the production, the actions of CP were normal as she has always been funny on and off camera. In other words, there was no cause for alarm, and thus no one minded CP.

On their last night at the location, CP knocked at MH's room. Then the following morning, someone saw CP coming out of MH's room. When asked by the staff what happened, CP quipped with her deadpan style, “Finally, Papa MH gave in!”

Did MH really give in to CP, who is not exactly known as a saint? Did MH's partner learn of his alleged “indiscretion?" Or was CP just imagining things? At any rate, MH and partner's relationship is solid as a rock as to get affected. But then - who are we to say?

If the treasure box is open, even the most upright will sin.

Letter from a Reader: Ooops! ... He Did It Again!

Dear Fashion PULIS,

Hi FP. I am an avid reader of your blog. I just want to share a story. We had the voices songs and rhythms during a festival 2012 held here in our province. I was part of the logistics team of the said event.

Our governor requested this perfomer PE to be one of the hosts of the event together with a beauty queen BQ. The call time was at 7pm, latest was 8pm. The event was star-studded with music industry veterans as judges, politicians and other stars. It was already 9pm but PE had not arrived yet because "traffic daw." The organizers had no choice but to start the program even without him.

We were very disappointed. PE didn't show any professionalism at all. The event was not his own show where he can afford to be late and be excused. Ours is a special gathering of people celebrating our festival. PE had no respect for people who trusted him enough to be part of this special occasion, most especially to our hardworking governor and the provincial staff who took great pains to make the event a big success. And also to our guests and performers, most of whom came all the way from Manila, too, and like PE had encountered traffic as well, but arrived way ahead of him. These were the people na pinaghintay nya.

BQ also had a hard time hosting because the script was written for both her and PE. People said that PE was complacent since he was close to our governor daw. But that is no excuse to abuse such closeness, if true. PE arrived around 9:30-10 pm already. Thanks, but really...no thanks!

Hope that next time he gets invited again, PE will be more professional and respectful of people.

Hold Your Horses, Dude!

At this time of the year, major television networks are busy with a thousand and one holiday events. One of those is usually a yearender affair, a gathering of its stable of stars.

During such network's event held recently, a male singer MS was furious upon seeing what looked like trash placed on his dressing room area. Immediately he posted this photo and message on his social networking site. The one whom he was alluding to, a fast-rising actor FA read the message and quickly approached MS and said, " Bro, I didn't intend to put trash on your dressing room area. I just left it there for the meantime because I had to hurry out for something important. But I sure will return to get it, like right now. "

MS was obviously embarrassed. Apparently, he didn't ask around first, and instead used his networking site to whine and rant publicly over such petty stuff.

Fate or faith - what brought about Manny Pacquiao's loss?

Did Manny Pacquiao's devastating loss to Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez send a strong message to the erstwhile pound-for-pound king?

Amidst the busy-ness of Christmas holidays, Manny has once again demostrated his magic to unite the nation to be witness to his greatness in the boxing ring. But sadly, the euphoria and the excitement died so fast towards the first half of Pacman's 4th fight with the Mexican. The manner of his loss was a very big upset, was totally unexpected, totally un-Pacquiao, having been knocked out cold and motionless in round 6.

The cameras caught the very tearful and hysterical Jinkee seeing her husband knocked out lying on the canvass. But more than that, was what the world witnessed -- the sight of the very powerful Pacquiao splattered face flat on the floor ... weak and defenseless.

People and observers who have suddenly turned boxing experts and life gurus were quick to give unsolicited analysis. What caused him to lose that fight?

- short preparation
- carelessness and too much confidence
- lack of focus
- fate
- all of the above

Among others, it was his faith, his allegedly leaving his Catholic religion that was the most controversial. It sent Mommy Dionisia going ballistic and blaming the born again Pastors for her son's misfortune. In the above situations, it is only Manny who has the final say what had gone right and wrong.

On the other hand, people will always have a say, to blame Pacman or to love and be proud of him inspite of. Whether he fights again or retire is his own business. But one thing is certain -- Manny Pacquiao is the only and the greatest Filipino boxer ever who gave us immeasurable pride as Filipinos!

Letter from a Reader: The Funnyman Isn't Funny

Dear Fashion PULIS,

I am writing to you to express my disgust towards a celebrity funnyman, FM's unkind and very inconsiderate treatment of our old people who were his avid fans.

On the eve of FM’s concert in our province, my friend F, a vocalist in a band playing at a local bar and restaurant BR, sent me an SMS that there would be a “Meet and Greet with FM” at that restaurant. F's mom, mommy M, was coming to see in person this popular comedian and host, together with her senior citizen friend, mommy S. Both women went travelling a good 50+ kilometers to get to the venue. The old women dropped everything for that day, and readied their camera for their idol FM.

I was curious of FM, too, as everyone finds him hilarious and funny. I’ve watched him occasionally on tv, and yes, he is talented and witty. Nevertheless, I really didn’t care much until I personally witnessed what fame can do to people like him. It’s sad that many look up to him but based on our experience, I find him not worthy at all of the adulation.

Okay, so mommies M and S and I were at BR. It was my treat for the two dear women of mine since we haven’t seen each other in a long time. Fortunately, F's gig was also scheduled that night. The plan was for FM to jam with her band. So we had dinner at the restaurant, then patiently waited for FM. Finally, the “celebrity” arrived with his entourage and had dinner there as well. We then waited till they were done. Mommy S said it was past her bedtime as it was already 10 PM but she really wanted to stay to have her photo taken with FM. Mommy M seconded and she excitedly told us that she would show her photo with FM to her customers at the parlor.

But that wasn't so -- as these old, plain women who only had one simple wish, a photo with their idol, went home very sad and frustrated. FM’s Manila organizers said that they were not informed that there would be a picture-taking. But there were like really few customers, come on! What was 5 minutes of FM's time? He could have made a difference!

Where is your goodwill, FM? You could have called the shots and actually said yes on your own because after all, the people in our province were hospitable and very civilized to you. At BR, we were very polite enough not to have meddled with you until you have thoroughly finished your dinner, and everything. The restaurant owner even pleaded with you that you would have photos with ONLY 5 groups, nothing more - para lang di naman magtampo, especially the old people who came from far away places and needed to go home that night.

We are a loving and kind people and we showed it to you, FM. You knew and felt it because you even tweeted about it many times. Nobody mobbed you, or did anything nasty. But what did you do in return? You broke their hearts! They thought that you’re a good role model until you shamed yourself in our city. Beware, curses from the old are very powerful. I’m afraid of what will happen to you, FM. Maybe you’re on top now, but it’s no guarantee that you will remain on top forever.

Boycotting your tv shows and gigs from now on, gives us power to put you on your place. Good riddance, FM.

On Cristalle Henares and Jason Sabio of Azkals

This message got to me forwarded by a common friend:

"HI guys! I don't know how to say this. You are all very close to me and Jason. We mutually decided to part ways. The reason is that we both are in different stages of our lives right now and have different plans for the near future (like him moving back to the States to finish school, etc). The easiest to move on is to do a clean cut and not even hang out with each other or be in the same place together. It's extreme but we have our reasons. I'm sending out this message so we don't have to discuss this anymore or talk about it when I see you guys. I hope you guys understand and can support me through this. "

We were quite surprised. Dr. Vicki Belo's heiress, Cristalle Henares and Azkals' Jason Sabio have called it quits. Everyone who knows them think it was a mature decision mutually agreed by both parties. The reasons were cited and we just have to respect that. Hoping they will be able to move forward from here on.

You Are Globally Special

Reality search winners: aspiring actor AA and his loveteam BB have a huge fanbase FB overseas who have supported them since they were still in the competition. This FB had been aggressive in their activities to show AA and BB just how they are loved. Unfortunately, AA was not really welcoming to the idea to have this huge FB around him all the time. People close to him say AA feels suffocated by them and their demands especially during interactions in social media like twitter. And AA certainly walked his talk by snubbing their first ever "get-together."

Although hurt from that snub, it didn't take awhile before FB organized another big get-together. They communicated all their concerns to AA and BB about this. But again, FB felt that the idea was not a sound and welcome one for AA. Yet again, he ditched his fans the second time. FB claimed too much damage resulted from that because some global fans from US, UAE. Singapore and Taiwan were already booked to see the loveteam but AA chose not to come, even though the handler did agree that AA was coming. FB claimed that AA was arrogantly ignoring his fans even on twitter. And blocking them if he saw some criticism directed at him.

But there were also talks that camp of AA and BB have sent advance notice two weeks ahead that they can't make it to the event so that FB's will have ample time to change their plans. BB said that she had prior commitment on that gtg day. But FB would have none of those.

Apparently, FB's finally decided to give up on the loveteam of AA and BB, to AA in particular, as they see the futility of all their efforts to support him. They contend that they supported him for so long inspite of his lack of talent, and had been very understanding of him amidst all his shortcomings to FB. But they say that AA's arrogance and ill treatment of them were always his way of returning the favor.

Until, AA's management decided to come into the picture to mediate and appease FB's feelings. As a result, AA made it to the get-together --- at the 11th hour, so to speak. But no matter what, the gesture kind of softened FB.

On the other hand, in the spirit of fairness, some people ask: Just how far should fans/supporters get involved in their idols' lives and career. Is there a parameter as far as the relationship between the two is concerned? It's true that fans spend good money to show their love and support, even sacrificing family time for their idols, among many others. But how far should they go? Some say there are fans who go overboard and make unreasonable demands to the stars, even abusing the use of social media to "harass and bash" their idols if their desires are not met. Some celebrities also complain of being targets of fans who turn bashers when requests are not granted. Have fans really evolved and now have the ultimate right to dictate at their own terms? Should celebrities give in and be threatened by these?

Again, when do we really draw the line?

Cover girl CG is acting up like she is so desperate for a lover. Once she was linked to the Hottest Guy HG in town. After her split with HG, she hooked up with a Very Popular musician VP who after a while dumped her. Right now, CG's undivided attention is focused on this one cute Media Personality MP.

CG tries her best to get noticed by MP at all costs, to the extent that she relentlessly stalks him via social network. Only recently, CG allegedly sent MP something sweet to his office. Unfortunately, due to health limitations, MP wasn't able to consume it. Hence, it was his staff who did the consuming for him. At MP's latest tv guesting, the Host HO, who was a friend to CG made insinuations to MP that CG's got a crush on him, as in he is the apple of her eyes. Surprised by such declaration, the ever gentleman PM, didn't want to offend HO and managed (or pretended?) to look like tickled, or "kilig" in tagalog. Being in media and aware of how television can cruelly magnify expressions, MP's reaction was understandable.

In one of MP's tv assignments, his heart went out to his subject, a Weather Forecaster WF. He took pity on the man for being so lowly paid that he couldn't even afford to have a cellphone. CG who was as expected watching MP at that time took the opportunity to once again make her presence felt, and perhaps gain points. Guess what CG did? She immediately sent over units of cellphone to MP's office. The package's sender's names indicated it came from CG and her gay bff.

But wait, there's more! In another situation, MP was going to host a formal corporate event and he tweeted asking his friends where he could buy a nice suit. CG read his tweet, and again came to the rescue and offered to send someone to take MP's measurements -- a subtle yet vulgar way of saying she would provide what he needed. But MP politely turned it down.

Seriously, those in the know said that MP just wants CG out, as he is completely turned off by her over-aggressiveness in pursuing him. Sounds cruel to hear for someone being alluded to. But, yes, the truth really hurts.

For those who don't know MP's background, his actions speak a lot about him and where he comes from. He just can not be dazzled and bought. And to CG, after your experiences with MP, guess it's about time to reassess yourself and learn more on what works best. Try another tack, something that won't disappoint big time. Also, prayers help.

Turn-Off Behavior of the Lifestyle Writer

Often when a product or a business is launched in Manila, the organizing company has a strict guest list. The invited people, whether friends or media representatives should observe decorum expected from a polite society. Hence, when this company launched its newest line of products, in the  guest list were those who moved in the same elite circle.

As in any product launch, there were freebies or gifts given to the guests as tokens of appreciation and  product promotion as well. These gifts are usually given during or towards the latter part of the launch. Since the guest list was screened, it goes without saying that the organizers expected a smooth sailing launch, which meant that no one would go around asking for his/her gift bag ahead of everyone else or acting too comfortably while mingling with the other guests. Or so the organizers thought…

One of the guests at the said launch was lifestyle writer (LW) who is known for his social crossovers to various forms of media. Prior to the start of the event, LW was seen along the hallway of the holding rooms looking like sneaking to get a few gift bags. Then, he handed the gift bags to his assistant with instructions, “Itago mo!” The two proceeded to the elevator while the assistant occasionally glanced in case there were witnesses to their mischief.

With his sneaky behavior, one could not help but think if LW behaves in this way in every product launch he attends. No one talks about it if ever maybe because of his status and influence.

Incidentally, if LW did not ask permission for the gift bags that he got, what do we call his act? And what do we call a person who commits such act? I can almost hear your brutally honest answers. 

Corruption or a Shrewd Move?

Did former network insider (FN) score a huge payout from a talent search? While serving as a consultant for the network, FN was also serving as the network's consultant in the talent search. Is the cash register ringing now? She allegedly charged every enrollee in her school a whopping fourth of a million each. Imagine if there were around ten students coming from the talent search, then the cash register would really be ringing happily! FN allegedly justified her tuition fees because her showbiz reputation as an influential mover and star maker was her investment in that school. Hence, anyone who gets training from her school is assured of the star treatment that probably made ​​her discoveries become household names.

Well, there are two ways of looking at this. First, people perceive FN might be corrupt, but her actions in the above situations might not fall under its definition. Second, FN can be looked upon as someone intelligent enough to know how much she is worth for the station. If the station paid her on her own terms, then much rests on her shoulders to build the careers of the winners of the said talent search. Now that the search is over, some quarters are unsatisfied pinpointing to her as allegedly favoring the winner, but that's another story.
