I met Jeremy Joslin while attending the NEJM Horizons Conference in October 2008 and was impressed by his drive to change the way medical education is delivered. His idea of an ideal medical information tool was "a robot that sits on my shoulder all day while I am seeing patients and collects information. Then during my 30-minute commute home, I can ask him: "What would an expert do for this patient with new-onset Afib?," and it can make an MP3 of the discussion." We need your help locating a radiograph that shows the Westermark sign! This rarely seen abnormality has resulted in a dearth of chest x-rays that are available (aka non-copyrighted) for us to include in the Joslin Chest Atlas. How to use a Windows Mobile phone to listen to medical podcasts?

My phone is Moto Q9c, Windows Mobile 6, with a Sprint SERO plan with unlimited data transfer.

Here are the 4 simple steps to listen to medical podcasts:

1. Download the Opera Mobile browser ($24). Internet Explorer should work fine but Opera is easier to use and has a better zoom feature.



2. Use Bloglines to subscribe to podcasts from your desktop/laptop.



3. Open Bloglines Mobile from your phone browser. Click on the "enclosure" link in the podcast feed. The podcast mp3 file will be downloaded.

4. Open the file with Windows Media Player. Enjoy listening to your favorite medical podcasts on the go.

MedCalc Has a Windows Mobile Version Now

The venerable free medical calculator MedCalc for Palm now has a Windows Mobile version as well. MedCalc was my PDA calculator of choice during residency but since I switched to Pocket PC (now called Windows Mobile), I had to use Archimedes instead.

It is nice to see that MedCalc is still alive and getting updated. I have assembled a long list of free PDA software here: Free Medical Programs for Windows Mobile / Pocket PC.

Free Procedure Guides for Pocket PC/Windows Mobile and Palm

Two years ago, a colleague of mine and I made several procedure guides illustrating central line placement and thoracentesis with step-by-step photos:

These photo guides proved very popular and are currently used for teaching purposes by residents at Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University/St. Vincent, and are linked in Wikipedia among several other web sites.

Eight months ago, I got an email from Andrew Schechtman, a Clinical Instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine and the founder of MeisterMed, a popular PDA portal for medical references. Andrew wanted to know if I was interested in adapting the procedure photo guides to PDA and distributing them for free. The original idea behind the guides was that they should be free and used by residents and physicians all over the world, and his suggestion to adapt them for PDA fitted that idea perfectly. I thought about it but somehow never found the time to do it.

Anyway, the procedure guides for PDA are now available for free from MeisterMed:

The guides themselves are free but they need the iSilo program for Pocket PC/Windows Mobile or Palm to work. The full version of iSilo is required to see the images beyond the trial period and that version costs $ 19. The guides are just like Microsoft Word documents -- you need to have MS Word installed on your computer in order to see the documents. Similarly, you need iSillo installed on your PDA to be able to see the photo guides.

Procedure guides are part of the MeisterMed Procedure Series which will be adding more titles in the near future.

Useful Pocket PC Programs

How to Run Palm Programs on a Pocket PC

Many physicians have migrated to Pocket PC/Windows Mobile PDAs and abandoned the good old faithful Palms.

The only problem is that most of us still have at least 2-3 well trusted Palm-only programs that regrettably do not work on Pocket PC. The solution is StyleTap -- a new application for Windows Mobile that enables you to run Palm software on Windows PDAs. You can download a free 14-day trial version. The full program is $ 30 (via MedPDA.net).

iSilo for Pocket PC

This program will allow you to run some of the best Palm tools on your Pocket PC. Palm Brain for Easy Interpretation of EKGs (download here) and the UCSF Hospitalist Handbook are just a few free Palm programs that work seamlessly on Windows PDAs with the new iSilo ($ 20).

Multi IE

This Pocket IE browser enhancement is a definite must-have for your internet-enabled Pocket PC. You can open multiple windows, view a full screen mode and many more. Multi IE sits on top of Pocket IE and provides a multitude of features. Download the 15-day trial version to see for yourself (the full version is $ 18). Multi IE was a finalist in the Pocket PC Magazine 2004 Awards.

Epocrates Rx - the absolutely essential program on every doctor's PDA is here, available for both Pocket PC and Palm, and free.

Archimedes from Skyscape
A free medical formulas calculator similar to MedCalc and MedMath (Palm). It requires just 2 MB of memory and can even be used on a desktop PC (separate download). You need to create a Skyscape account. Click here for other free programs from Skyscape.

MedCalc
A free medical calculator.

Current Clinical Strategies (CCS) Library
You have to buy at least one CCS book, e.g. Medicine, Critical Care, Family Medicine, etc. ($ 16-18 each in the bookstore) in order to use the free download library.
Use the first 4 numbers of your book ISBN as your user name and password to download the CCS books for Palm and Pocket PC

ECG Palm Brain
This is the best ECG reference in the mobile world. Simple, easy to understand, beautifully illustrated and very logical. Free. The title says that it is for Palm PDAs but it works just fine on Pocket PC with iSilo ($ 19).

Avantgo
This is a free browser-based program which contains multiple channels including news, sports, weather, and magazines. You "subscribe" to websites for updates, similar to RSS/XML syndication.

Google Local mobile page
Free maps and driving directions. You need a web-enabled PDA to use it.

Mobile Answers
Free service offering entries and illustrations on more than 1 million topics from encyclopedias, atlases and dictionaries. Web access is required.

Mobipocket
This a free Pocket PC/Palm reader with a large library of free classic books.

Microsoft Pocket Streets 2005 - Street map atlas - $ 25.

Text-to-Speech applications let you PDA read the articles or emails to you:
