Health News of the Day

Health News of the Day is a daily summary made from the selected links I post on Twitter. It is in a bullet points format with links to the original sources which include 350 RSS feeds that produce about 2,500 items per day.

  • Too little sleep (less than six hours) may raise diabetes risk. People who slept less than six hours were 4.5 times more likely to develop abnormal blood sugar readings. Too little sleep increases risk of obesity, depression, hypertension, falls, infections, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Adults typically need between 7-9 hours of nightly sleep, according to CDC http://is.gd/mYXH

  • Sleep research: people who like to wake up very early every day may have a genetic abnormality. Sleep researcher: “You have to view your body as a whole collection of different clocks” http://is.gd/mZ0W

  • Lack of sleep can make us feel distracted, foggy and forgetful - recovery mediated through an adenosine receptor http://is.gd/mYZR

  • If Americans reduced salt intake by one gram per day, there would be 250,000 fewer new cases of heart disease in 10 years. Americans on average eat 9 to 12 grams of salt per day, or 3,600 to 4,800 milligrams of sodium. Read the labels. 3-gm per day reduction in salt (1,200 mg of sodium) will result in 6% fewer new cases of heart disease and 3% fewer deaths http://is.gd/mZ2g

  • Neck Size Linked to Heart Risk - as your collar size grows, so does your risk of heart disease http://is.gd/mZ3C

  • America's Best States to Live: Residents of these areas have a higher quality of life than others in the U.S. http://is.gd/mY8d
