Health News of the Day

Health News of the Day is a daily summary made from the selected links I post on Twitter. It is in a bullet points format with links to the original sources which include 350 RSS feeds that produce about 2,500 items per day.

  • Too much TV linked to higher asthma risk, if you can believe that. Children who watch television for more than two hours a day have twice the risk of developing asthma. Asthma affects more than 300 million people worldwide and is the most common children's chronic illness. Asthma accounts for one in 250 deaths globally each year, linked to obesity and lack of exercise http://is.gd/lxDF

  • Hospitalizations for respiratory problems rise on hot, humid days. Hospital admissions rose by 4% for each degree increase in temperature beyond the 90-percent threshold http://is.gd/lFwx

  • High-fructose corn syrup linked to high triglycerides, fatty liver and insulin resistance. Some studies show that fructose is metabolized differently than glucose is, being more readily converted into fat http://is.gd/lFyl - Saturday Night Live - High Fructose Corn Syrup Commercial http://j.mp/k777o1
  • Watching films and TV ads in which alcohol is featured drives people to immediately reach for the bottle themselves http://is.gd/lFYv

  • Short of Dentists, Maine Adds Teeth to Primary Care Doctors’ Training http://tinyurl.com/au5gen

  • Two alcoholic drinks a day increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 22%. 6% of U.S. cancer deaths in 2008 were attributed to pancreatic cancer http://is.gd/lFrX

  • Patients who took Plavix with a PPI had a 25% increased risk of dying or of requiring hospitalization http://is.gd/lFsL

  • People who suffer a heart attack nearly double the risk of having another if they take Plavix and Prilosec. "If we stop prescribing PPIs for post-MI patients on Plavix, we will see more bleeding complications" http://is.gd/lFvH

  • Work the Night Shift? "Internal desynchronization" may lead to diabetes http://is.gd/lFti
