Business leaders discuss possibility of expanding Medicaid through private insurance

By Molly Burchett
Kentucky Health News

Some Kentucky business leaders are discussing a possible endorsement of expanding Medicaid through private insurance, in a plan similar to one the federal government approved for Arkansas.

The Health Policy Council of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce discussed the idea last Friday. A talking paper for the meeting highlighted presumed benefits of the approach, in which people newly eligible for Medicaid could use federal funds to buy private insurance through the insurance exchange that the state is constructing.

The health council has yet to decide the chamber's position on Medicaid expansion, but the council's talking paper said expanding Medicaid privately might be a better option than expansion of traditional Medicaid, considering the state's tight budget and already problematic managed care system.

The paper says a private plan would be beneficial to Kentucky because it would allow market forces to control costs and ultimately result in better health care. Private expansion would also prevent a flood of newly eligible people from entering the managed care system. "If Kentucky accepts the traditional Medicaid expansion, everyone that qualifies would be put into the already struggling managed care system, which until changes are made, cannot support the influx," the paper asserted.

The Obama administration has encouraged states to consider the Arkansas approach, the paper says.  To do so, states need to apply for a waiver, and the administration has provided information on how a state would apply. "Florida, Ohio, Louisiana, Maine and Pennsylvania are all looking into this option," the paper said.

An estimated 181,000 uninsured adults would become eligible for Medicaid in 2014, if Kentucky decides to accept the funds offered by the health law to provide coverage to those earning up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level.

Gov. Steve Beshear has said he will make his decision about Medicaid expansion no later than July 1. His office has declined to say whether the privatized option is under consideration, saying, "The governor is considering multiple issues as he determines whether Kentucky will expand Medicaid eligibility.  Along with affordability for the state, he is also looking at potential economic impact through jobs and investment created by possible expansion, as well anticipated changes in health outcomes for newly-eligible Kentuckians."

The 5 Best Video Conferencing Software on the Market

Video conferencing has evolved in recent years. What once required elaborate equipment set ups and expensive service prices can now be accomplished with the common office computer or smartphone and high-speed Internet. The shift from hardware to software-based conferencing solutions have opened up the platform to an increasing number of businesses and organizations. These five video conferencing solutions are the best on the market.

1. InterCall

InterCall has been a major player in the video conferencing industry for years. As the world's largest conferencing provider, they power over 75% of Fortune 1000 companies. Their software supports dedicated conferencing equipment as well as computers, smart phones and other devices for maximum compatibility. Various service tiers offer the perfect way to balance the needs of your business and your budget. Beyond web conferencing, InterCall offers a multitude of other services that can propel your business into areas that were otherwise unobtainable. Services like virtual environments and video bridge services put InterCall in a separate category from their competitors.

2. Adobe Connect

When it comes to sheer number of features, it is hard to beat Adobe Connect. It supports most major operating systems and devices and allows everything from simple text-based chat to full-scale meetings with up to 99 attendees. Other features include collaboration, file sharing, conference archiving and more. From personal use to full enterprise deployment, Adobe Connect has something to offer.

3. Skype

As one of the first video calling software offerings on the scene, Skype has seen plenty of growth since its debut. With the ability to enable free video conferences with up to 5 people simultaneously and include both voice and video attendees, Skype is a great choice for small businesses or others looking to harness the power of video conferencing on a budget. Should you need to include someone on a landline or cell phone in your conference; low per-minute rates apply.

4. GoToMeeting

For a mid-sized solution, GoToMeeting is a great choice. Of all the offerings listed, it is certainly the most easy to use. Unfortunately, it also tops out at just 15 attendees unless you upgrade to the corporate edition. Starting a meeting is as simple launching the software and inviting members. Support for email invitations, smart phone apps and web apps make it simple for others to join. Just click the link and you are placed in the conference and on your way.

5. TokBox Video Conference

TokBox is a video conferencing solution with an emphasis on production and engagement. It features a full command center that allows advanced features, such as picture-in-picture, media sharing, transition effects and more. Pre-recorded video questions can also be submitted and seamlessly integrated into the conference for better flow and engagement. Should you need it, all of this can be delegated to a meeting producer that controls everything throughout the conference. The result is a meeting or presentation with a professional appearance and greater participation. The service supports up to 200 attendees per conference for great flexibility. Additional services are available for a small fee and include conference archiving, collaboration tools, dedicated support and API integration.

Whether you are looking to stay in touch with friends or pitching a product to attendees from around the world, video conferencing software has a wide range of uses. Best of all, many software choices support virtually any device you might own. These five solutions offer outstanding flexibility, a range of prices, easy to use designs and are the best available on the market.

How Location Can Determine Your Retail Sales Goals

If you're searching for effective methods that will help you know how to improve gift shop retails sales, location is another major determining factor that can determine your retail sales goals. In addition to other factors such as maintaining a social media presence, and using custom retail packaging, your shop's location can determine how much profit your business can generate.

Large retailers may be able to deal with a few locations that aren't ideal, small business owners who have only one or two stores can't afford this luxury. Finding the perfect retail location is critical to your business success, here are eight tips on choosing a retail store location in order to maximize your sales potential:

Patience is Essential

If you're just starting out, it's hard to be patient. Opening day can't come soon enough. Don't let impatience cause you to settle for a location that won't serve your needs because this can cost you in the long run. The amount of sales that your business generates is integral to your store's location.

Choose a Suitable Location

You don't want to make your customers travel off the beaten path to find your gift shop. You need your location to be highly visible in order to draw customers in. Your business location should be in an area that has high visibility, great signage, and plenty of foot traffic.

Research Consumer Traffic

Before you decide on a store location you need to take the time to evaluate consumer traffic in the area. You need to know how many people walk by the location during the business day and how much traffic passes by? Can cars easily access the location and is it served by public transportation? These are factors that you need to know.

Check Out Your Neighbors

Some retailers have discovered that being next to a big chain competitor isn't a bad idea. They benefit from the excess foot traffic. Of course, you don't have to look for a location next to a national chain, you should look for an area that is near other shops and businesses that your customers will be interested in as well.

Know Your Neighborhood

You have to find out about the area that you are considering opening shop it. Make sure the area is active and stable and not on its way out as a popular shopping location. Also, you should research the demographics and make sure they match your target market as this will play a huge part in how much sales your shop will be able to generate.

Never Overpay

Another factor that is often overlooked is the difference in price between the best location and the second best location is sometimes greater than the difference in customer traffic. You should not overlook the fact that sometimes a good location may be better than a great one.

Convenient Parking is Essential

Too little parking and non-existent parking can reduce your ability to generate the necessary traffic required to generate adequate sales.

Suitable Space Required

There isn't any point in taking a large location only to pay for space you won't use or taking a smaller location that doesn't allow you to properly display your wares. Additionally, if you want to tempt window shoppers, you'll need a large picture window. You have to take into account your store's needs when you evaluate any location.

Your shop's location will be the driving force behind your sales goals. It won't be realistic to expect or set a large amount of sales to occur if there is little foot traffic in an area. Make sure your location is adequate and that your sales goals fit your location.

What You Need to Learn Before You Buy a Run-down Property

Buying a run-down property and turning it into something special is a big challenge but one which you could get a lot of pleasure from. Rather than rushing into this work, you should first of all think about what you need to know in order to get started.

How to Work Out the Budget

Dilapidated houses can eat up a lot of money. If you aren't clear from the start on how much you need to spend on it then you will almost certainly run into problems at some point. You can't afford to overlook any task when working out your budget, no matter how small it appears to be. All of the costs will mount up and you could end up having to make some compromises later on if you aren't smart about getting the budget right from the start.

How to Do DIY Jobs

Are you planning to get in builders, plumbers, electricians, plasterers and painters to do all of the work for you? If you are in a hurry you might do this but it would make more financial sense to do some of the work yourself. Your first step could be to think about the DIY jobs which you would be comfortable doing. After this you could then think about whether it would be worth your while going on a course and thereby avoiding the need to hire a specialist for other jobs. A good idea here is to look for local plastering courses, as this is a skill you should be able to pick up more easily than you might think and it will save you a decent amount of money if you do it yourself.

How to Stay Patient

Of course, it probably won't all be plain sailing for you. Carrying out a lot of work on an old property can be a hugely frustrating business. For a start, you run the risk of discovering jobs needing done which weren't in the original scope of the refurbishment. You might also be let down by tradesmen or suppliers and this can have a knock on effect for the whole piece of work. If you aren't a particularly patient person then you will want to find a way of relaxing and being more patient while the work is going on. For some people the secret lies in not getting too caught up in it and instead finding a way of staying away from the house as much as possible.

How to Deal with Problems

With a bit of luck you won't come across too many problems when you are doing up your run-down house but it is more than likely that something goes wrong along the way. The best way to react when this happens is not to panic. Instead, you need to try and stay cool and calm while you try and work out what to do next. Your patience may be severely tested during this time but if you can keep it under control then you stand a far better chance of finishing the work successfully.

Small Businesses Get Set for the Better Lending

For many folks heading to work today, their concerns will lie little further than a few weeks ahead. But for Britain's exceptional network of small business and e-fulfilment companies, the next few weeks could be crucial to the year's business.

UK-based order fulfilment companies are already setting their sights on a busy festive season. Despite economic concerns such as small businesses struggling, fulfilment companies are heeding the Bank of England's words in relation to an £80 billion scheme to boost lending to small businesses. And more small businesses means more demand for order fulfilment.

The scheme flies in the face of research published by the Federation for Small Businesses (FSB), which found that around four in every ten small business loan applicants is being turned down by big banks.

The FSB has long campaigned for more flexible lending, and George Osborne has announced that the aim of the £80 billion scheme is to release funds to banks at very low interest rates, but on the condition the money goes towards funding their own lending.

Despite the FSB's misgivings about the scheme (believing that only tougher competition within the banking sector will see real change), small business owners are looking towards a future that could include more flexible lending, lower rates and, ultimately, company growth.

Set to start within the next few weeks, the scheme could be the shot in the arm Britain's small businesses need to do their bit for economic recovery.

Parents Admit "Borrowing" Money from Children's Money Boxes

Mums and dads have come clean about being sometimes so broke they have had to take cash from their children's money boxes. A survey from Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks carried out last year found that more than half of parents whose youngsters are aged between five and 12 admitted taking money that wasn't theirs.

A total of 13% confessed to using the funds because they had no other resources. Equally, a minority of 3% of mums and dads admitted that they never returned the money to their kids.

However, of course money boxes for children remain excellent presents for teaching children to save and to start learning about the value of money. They also make saving fun!

And children could need all the help they can get while the national pocket money budget is currently a weekly tally of £40m, around a quarter of mums and dads have cut down on how much they give their offspring, reports the Tesco Bank. The UK weekly average is £5.80, mostly given in return for help with chores, while the average in London is a couple of pounds higher per week.

Equally, if you thought your choices were still limited to the standard piggy bank, think again. These days, whether you are buying money boxes or a children's music box, it's more possible than ever to find the perfect gift, which you can make unique by personalising it.

A huge array of designs is available, in materials ranging from wood to ceramic and more. If you want to be encouraged to save up for something special yourself, there are even some great designs around for grown-ups too!

How Can You Manage Success?

In business it's very easy to judge success, profit. Or should that be profit by comparison to your nearest rivals? Actually, success isn't as easy to determine as you might first assume. Often, you might think you're a successful business, when you could be so much better. How can you tell success, and how do you manage success effectively?

What do we mean by success management?

Success management is about managing the elements of your business that make it a success. This could be the performance of a specific team of professionals. Let's say you operate a call centre, well success will be determined by the performance of call centre professionals, as well as other factors.

So, the key to success in a call centre is ensuring the consistent high performance of call centre operatives. There are various tools at your disposal to ensure this performance, and to iron out any flaws in their performance to enhance how they deal with the public.

You can use call centre software to do this. For example, you can employ call recording software which records the detail of correspondence made over the telephone. This information can be used to great effect to identify failings in your workforce, and ways in which telephone protocol can be enhanced.

In the final analysis, success can be defined by the performance of people, which can be improved in all sorts of different ways including the implementation of software.
