Motor Sports, Demon Tweeks and the Modern Hobbyist: Preparing the Vehicle for Racing

The world is full of motor sports enthusiasts racers; detailers; and car preparation geeks whose central joy is the creation and performance of surprising machines. There's a lot of colour and power in these quite focused worlds, all of which have their own shorthand and their own special vehicles. Places like Demon Tweeks (and this is not the only one, by far), which supply the materials and the knowhow to serve the race enthusiasts, exist at the heart of the hobbyist's world.

To understand the products provided by the hobbyist centres, you first have to understand something about the world in which they exist. There are two core concepts at the heart of the racing world: speed and safety.

Speed is the ultimate goal of all racing preparation. It is, in itself, served by a nested set of sub-concepts all goals that the detailer or tuner wishes to achieve in order to serve the overall prize of attaining greater speeds without sacrificing safety. Performance, for example, which is a word you'll hear flying around the pits and garages a lot, is not simply defined as "going faster than everything else". To perform well, a vehicle must be nimble around corners without sacrificing too much forward motion in the process. It must be able to achieve high speeds quickly without losing handling ability.

To achieve good performance, the tuner looks not just at the power developed by the engine, but the ability of the suspension to deal with that power as it is pushed out through turning wheels. As a rapidly moving vehicle changes direction, the bite of the wheels on the racing surface is compromised by the sudden intrusion of lateral and twisting forces which, where rigid suspension is concerned, can be translated into fishtailing and bellying. Modern suspension, then, must be introduced to take more individual control of each wheel effectively allowing the car or bike to cope with changes in directional force as well as changes in the actual architecture of the road beneath.

There's a fine line the tuner and detailer must tread, between weight and power. The lighter a vehicle is, the faster it goes: but then the more powerful it is, the harder it becomes to control without weight sitting over the wheels. The goal is to find the perfect medium between stripping out extra weight and adding more power, so the car or bike may be controlled by an expert without shaving active horsepower out of its performance. "Active horsepower" may be thought of as the amount of power developed by the engine that actively increases the speed of the vehicle, rather than simply allowing the wheels to move the weight of its body.

The second major element of vehicle tuning safety is present throughout all of these considerations. To make a vehicle lighter, for example, a person may also make it much less structurally safe particularly where the major weight elements in the chassis and frame are those installed to keep the driver safe.

To properly tune a car for racing, then, it is necessary to replace key bits of the body with lighter but stronger materials. Carbon is often used for this purpose. Its structural integrity makes it much more robust than metal. Yet it is also much lighter, allowing the vehicle to develop more power and performance.

2013 Harley-Davidson CVO Breakout

In our opinion: In the pecking order of factory custom cruisers, the exclusive Harley CVO models stand tall. The Breakout is happier going straight than cornering and most comfortable cruising at less than 70 mph so if that's your habitat, here's your bling.

Perhaps a shrink can explain sometime why crows, brook trout and people like shiny things. But until then, know that the Harley-Davidson CVO Breakout attracts an audience like a shimmering lure zaps a rainbow out of the aspen shadows. The Breakout new for 2013 from Harley's Custom Vehicle Operations in Milwaukee is a dazzling interpretation of the popular Softail. It features a tuned 1,802-cc OHV V-twin, six-speed gearbox, rangy 67.3-inch wheelbase and the most relaxed seating this side of a La-Z-Boy. Bottom line: It's a cruiser rather than a carve-'em-up apex hunter.

But what really distinguishes the CVO Breakout are its show-quality paint and components. From the unique wheels and fenders to the handlebar and engine covers virtually everything is chromed, metal flake or polished.

It also thoroughly grabs attention from nearly everyone. After one ride, we parked at a cafe to write some notes. A family was intently helping their doddering matriarch to a car parked alongside the CVO. "We're going to get grandma a motorbike!" mom said, grinning.

Riding the Breakout is different than a sport bike. The 25.8-inch seat height lets you wheel around the 728-pound mass with relative ease, although the long wheelbase and slow-steering geometry make the CVO turn like a La Guardia limo. Electric starting and EFI add civility, but, while clutch engagement is beautiful, shifting is clunky and loud. Low- and midrange power are terrific, but the power curve signs off early, further pigeonholing the Breakout into cruiser rather than go-fast duty.

However, that has a place in our world, just as does this bike's spectacular presentation. Billions of crows, trout and humans can't all be wrong.

Tesla's Model S Sets a New Standard for Battery

Top Speed:130 mph

Until now, there hasn't been an all-electric car fit for road-tripping. But Tesla's Model S, due out late in 2012, is made for extended drives. Its battery goes up to 300 miles on a charge. Its cabin is spacious enough for seven passengers. And it can get up to cruising speed fast the Model S accelerates from 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds.

BIGGER BATTERY
At 85 kilowatt-hours, the Model S boasts more than triple the battery capacity of the Nissan Leaf. Its thousands of lithium-ion cells use a new electrode chemistry from Panasonic, which could allow them to store more power than other comparably sized cells.

FAST CHARGE
Tesla plans to install proprietary 440-volt charging stations (first along the I-5 Corridor between Los Angeles and San Francisco) built to match up with the Model S's circuitry. They will provide a full charge in an hour. Standard chargers will require a full night.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL
To protect the motor, circuitry and battery from heat, channels filled with liquid coolant run through the components. Pumps cycle coolant through a front radiator and a pair of A/C condensers. This helps the motor deliver twice the power of its Roadster predecessor.

LIGHT BODY
To increase the sedan's range, the designers of the Model S kept its weight low with a body constructed from 97 percent aluminum. They added heavier structural steel only where necessary for safety: in central supports and front-end crash zones.

ROOMY CABIN
The Model S's batteries sit beneath the floor in a large flat pack that spreads the width of the car and about two thirds of its length. This arrangement leaves ample space in the trunk for cargo or two backward-facing jump seats. The main interior holds five adults.
